Review 4K Movie

Jacques Audiard, one of the screenwriters of The Professional and director of Dipane (Palme d'Or 2015), is making his first English-language film and chooses for this experiment the most fundamental American genre of cinema - the Western. And we must admit, he turned out just fine. At this year's Venice Film Festival, the film was warmly received by critics and audiences, and Jacques Audiard received the Silver Lion for Best Director.

The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Canadian novelist and screenwriter Patrick deWitt. The film is set in 1851 in the western United States during the gold rush. The main characters are the bounty hunter brothers named Sisters (John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix). They are bounty hunters and are tasked by a certain Commodore (Rutger Hauer) to find and finish off the gold-digging adventurer Herman Warm (Riz Ahmed). Among other things, Warm is also followed by a much softer man, John Morris (Jake Gyllenhaal).

This adventure film is filled not only with the harsh reality of those years, but also with good humor, making it even feel like a fairy tale while watching it. "The Sisters Brothers" is easy to watch and with great curiosity, because the plot sometimes takes unpredictable turns. And the acting and the chemistry that emerges between the brothers, played by John C. Reilly (who has starred repeatedly in Paul Thomas Anderson and other notable directors) and Joaquin Phoenix (perhaps the most underrated actor of our time) is simply mesmerizing. Riz Ahmed (a great role in the mini-series "One Night Stand") and Jake Gyllenhaal (also an award-winning, but certainly a great actor), who have many scenes together in the film (by the way, they have already worked together on the great film "Stringer"), also played at a high level and were able to create interesting images of their characters. Jacques Audiard admired how much preparation and how much literature Gyllenhaal read to convincingly play the East Coast graduate of the time.

The acting would not have been so great if the characters and their development over time had not been so well written out. And each of the four main characters changes. In the course of the movie, we learn some personal stories from the life of this or that character, thus, we better understand the motives and the logic of each of them. For example, Worm turns out not to be a greedy prospector, but a scholarly idealist, a follower of the French philosopher Saint-Simon. Also beautiful is the scene in which Eli Sisters (big guy John C. Reilly) buys himself a toothbrush. With this shot, the director draws not so much on impending progress as on the delicate mental organization of one of the brothers.

In fact, The Sisters Brothers is not a classic Western, but a much more multi-layered and non-genre work. Therefore, there is no point in comparing it with the classic John Ford films, but we can draw an entertaining parallel with the so-called spaghetti westerns, i.e. westerns that were made in Southern Italy and not at all in the USA. One of the most famous (and, according to some critics, the best) of all westerns is Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, starring Clint Eastwood, which was made in Italy. So the shooting of The Brothers Sisters took place in Spain and Romania, not in their historic homeland.

Among other things, it is necessary to note the unobtrusive musical accompaniment by Alexandre Desplat (winner of two Oscars for "The Shape of Water" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel") and the excellent camerawork by Benoit Deby (the fiery "Ecstasy" by Gaspar Noé is his handiwork). The daytime scenes captivate with the beauty of nature and the bright sunny atmosphere, while the night scenes, such as the opening firefight, where only the flashes of gunfire are visible in pitch black, emphasize the power of nature in a time when electrification was not yet widespread.

"The Sisters Brothers" is one of the best pictures of the past year, aimed at a wide audience that should appeal to highbrow intellectuals and mainstream movie buffs alike.
