It is now Marvel working for one big monopolist in the field of cinema and can afford to break billions at the box office with their films. But there was a time when the company was in such a crisis that they had to sell the rights to characters to various studios in order to stay afloat. Today's film under review marks Marvel's first box office success. This is partly due to the fact that at that time the vampire theme, although it was noticeable, had not yet revealed itself.

Blade is a 70s comic book character who is a half-breed. His pregnant mother was once bitten by a vampire, and now he has the abilities of vampires, like strength and speed, but he is not afraid of silver, garlic and light. Quite the opposite, using all this, he becomes a real thunderstorm among bloodsuckers, exterminating them at night.

I note that in addition to vampire abilities, the creators attributed Blade and an overestimated chance of good luck. In the course of the plot, our hero rescues the girl Karen, who works as a hematologist - a blood doctor, and she helps Blade very much in hunting vampires. I know nagging sounds silly, but what if Karen worked as a urologist or ENT? How would the boy get out then?

Omit the fact that vampires are sometimes so stupid that they themselves climb on the rampage. Blade has one, I repeat, one assistant who can still fight back in his old age. I understand everything, 1998, "Night Watch" did not smell yet. However, don't you think that these two features could withstand the whole race of vampires? Regardless of how tough Blade is, this war is about quantity, not quality.

Wesley Snipes fit perfectly into the role of Blade. His character is a real killing machine. He perfectly wields a sword, shoots vampires once or twice and shows indifference even in a situation when he is surrounded by a flock of hungry bloodsuckers. And yes Roger Ebert favors me, the film is as good as the villain is. Deacon Frost, put in the place of the Chief Guard, is also a half-breed. Actor Stephen Dorff showed a young and charismatic bastard who longs to summon a vampire deity and spit everything that purebred bloodsuckers told him on a carousel. And he is not the only one such rebel, after him all the young and converted vampires are ready to go and rip their throats.

Stephen Norrington is very good at highlighting the main feature of the film - it is masterfully shot. Unusual camera angles, clip-editing, special effects look a bit old, but this is 1998. Good music, you will need to find the song that plays during the vampire disco party at the beginning of the film. By the way, my thanks to the creators for this scene! First, we see Blade in all his toughness. Secondly, on a subconscious level, I was happy that a half-blood hunter had done a cleanup there. I hate clubs.

A film with a simple plot that breaks the established stereotypes about its genre. He showed that vampires can not only live in medieval castles, pretend to be aristocrats, but in the end take the appearance of a tired Brad Pitt and tell their biography. The local bloodsuckers dress in a modern way, parkour, spit on the foundations. A good symbiosis of action, thriller and horror.
