At the beginning of the film, we see a young and energetic Tom Cruise (Charlie) playing the resentful and disadvantaged father of a rich son. At the funeral Charlie goes 'for the tick', showing once again his callousness towards his father. Here, too, we can label the problem of fathers and children with a literary word. Lack of parental love is a very common theme. Although Charlie left his father's home at 16 and set up his own business, he could not forgive his father, which shows the immaturity of his thinking.

Upon learning that his father had left an inheritance not to him but to his brother, whose existence he had not known until that day, Charlie decides to settle the matter quickly by visiting the clinic where his sick brother was confined, kidnapping him in the hope of appropriating the inheritance. But from the moment of the kidnapping, the transformation of Tom Cruise's character begins. Lacking anything human, Charlie would never have taken pity on his brother and would have carried out his plan to the end by any 'dirty' means. But here his brother's limited abilities bring forth brotherly love, human compassion, and reveal the world to Charlie in a different light.

The impeccable and insightful acting of the main characters touches the heart and does not leave its viewer indifferent. It is also impossible not to note the importance of the presence of Charlie's girlfriend (Valeria Golino) in the brothers' lives, who immediately penetrated into Raymond's life. She tried to bring out the man in Raymond and Charlie to be more gentle and compassionate.

There have been many parses, critiques, and reviews about the film over the years, but the main appeal would be to all those about to or in doubt - to watch or not - unequivocally yes!
