Story Movie
Compton, 1988 The father of five daughters, Richard Williams, has long made a detailed plan for the future of his girls and is stubbornly following it, and from eight-year-old Venus and seven-year-old Serena, he intends to make tennis stars. Although Richard and his wife, Brandi, know little about preparing professional tennis players, they themselves trained their daughters and taught them the technique as best they could. World-famous coach Paul Cohen, who works with Pete Sampras and John McEnroe, agrees to free lessons, but only for Venus. Then Richard records the classes on camera, and Brandi begins to train Serena based on them.
Review 4K Movie
Not to say that I'm a big fan of Will Smith's work, because his career is a real roller coaster: from the legendary Men in Black to After our era, from pleasant Focus to Suicide Squad and Aladdin. It seems that the time has come to plunge into a good project, and King Richard is a good option for this, because a rather interesting story of the life of the family of eminent tennis players Venus and Serena Williams was brought here. Sports dramas rarely become cinematic masterpieces, but they almost always leave the viewer satisfied.
Plot. Although the film is based on the biography and personal notes of Williams, inside it allows deviations from the real story, which is not prohibited, because this is a feature film, not a documentary. The father of a large family, Richard, after seeing an interview with an athlete on TV, decided to devote his life to training and promoting his two daughters (Venus and Serena) into the world of professional tennis. He even made a detailed plan to achieve his goal, and in order to devote day time to training with the girls, he got a night job. However, the situation is complicated not only by the fact that the family does not have the funds for the best coaches, but also by the fact that tennis is a 'white game', and the Williamses live in a ghetto area. Although the father was strict and demanding, the girls were always happy to listen to him, feeling love, care and protection. Following their guiding star and overcoming great and seemingly unrealistic obstacles, two sisters from the ghetto, to the delight of Richard, gain worldwide fame and reach unprecedented heights.
Agenda. You know, I am very skeptical about all manifestations of modern curtsies towards various minorities militant for their rights (especially if this is added for show). But in this film, a demonstration of fortitude and overcoming additional obstacles, due only to racial affiliation, was appropriate and organic. It evokes a proper sense of injustice, and at the same time - respect and joy for the achievements of the heroes. And it doesn't look like a damn contemporary agenda, it's plot hooks based on the real story of real people.
The acting. After the role of Hancock, I periodically think that Will Smith wins back drunk characters. And even in this film, this feeling arose. But the actor's contribution to this work was significant, and it was through his efforts that the character gained great strength on the screen. But not only Smith keeps the picture, because previously unfamiliar actors also made a good impression. Saniya Sidney and Demi Singleton, who played the Williams sisters, grab the attention of the viewer, making them smile and worry along with their characters.
Frames after the credits. As I said, the film was made not only from interviews and biography of Richard and the Williams sisters, but also from personal surviving video recordings. It was their director who inserted them after the credits. Looking at them, the viewer not only notices a well-chosen cast, similar to the prototypes, but also recalls the frames of the film, with trepidation restoring real events. This is an additional bonus that leaves a pleasant aftertaste after viewing.
Logic inconsistencies. I don't know how it was in real life. However, some aspects of the film caused me distrust, which led to skeptical questions about the events shown. And here are some of them:
- Richard, not having the education of a sports coach, constantly interferes in the learning process and criticizes the work of professionals. Yes, he meets a little resistance, but it is barely noticeable. Why do tough specialists obediently obey the peasant from the ghetto, being afraid to challenge his word? After all, he is, in fact, nobody. And the competition is so high that one could easily be sent far and for a long time for obvious disobedience during training.
- According to Richard himself (the character of the film), he has long drawn up a detailed plan for the development of his girls. But in the first conversation with the coach, he is surprised at the existence of junior competitions. What then was written in his plan, and how else did he want to promote young athletes?
- Having little experience in sports at a serious level, I know the importance of game practice for professionals, which the character of the film refuses for 4 years. It's through practice that the best players learn to stay focused and pull themselves together at the right time. There is an episode in the film when Venus, losing during the meeting, looks into the distance, sighs, smiles and goes to tear his opponent to pieces. How does it work and where did this experience come from?
- The film has a very fat branch with a greyhound guy in the area, which does not receive a logical conclusion. She was supposed to play her part and be reflected in the characters or in further events, but this does not happen. Why was she abandoned?
- The film in one dialogue suddenly inserts information about Richard's other children, which does not add credibility to the phrase, and does not flirt further. So why did they put it in?
There were two Williams sisters: Venus and Serena. Inside the film, a lot of attention is given to the first, and the development of the second is shown very poorly, which makes it seem that she could not have turned out to be a cool tennis player under such conditions. But it was Serena who achieved great fame. Why was her branch also cut off without a logical conclusion?
- And, finally, real shots after the film show that a loving father in the forefront was rooting for his girls. Why did the movie need to make him distant and less involved during matches?
Perhaps the real story had something to answer all these questions, but the film left me alone with them without giving the necessary information. I do not rule out that I missed something, and other viewers can help me figure it out better.
