1956. London tailor Leonard moved to Chicago, where he opened his own atelier. His clients include gangsters, among others. One evening, the wounded son of a powerful gangster and his bodyguard show up at the atelier, ambushed by a rival gang.

The 2022 crime film 'The Outfit' has fairly high ratings of 7.2 on IMDB and 6.9 on Kinopoisk. At Rotten Tomatoes the rating from critics is 84% and from viewers 92% out of 100. Except that it's hard to explain such a positive reception and rave reviews without insulting those who praise the originality of this film's script.

'The Outfit' is a chamber drama set in a Chicago men's suit tailoring atelier in the 1950s. The main character is the owner of the atelier, a masterful and self-absorbed tailor. His only employee is a young salesgirl with whom he has a warm, almost parental relationship.

The peaceful course of studio life is broken only by men who come there not at all for suits, but to leave envelopes intended for local mafia bosses in a special box. They are periodically followed by the son of a gangster family boss and his comrade. One day, the two break into the atelier with a gunshot wound and the news that a confrontation between their gang and a rival mafia family has begun. This event turns deadly for the costumer and turns into a night of intricate machinations and uncovered secrets.

The theatricality of 'The Outfit' is especially noteworthy. It looks like a play adaptation - all the action takes place within the walls of a building and the dialogues are the engine of the plot. All the gangster squabbles are left at the door, and all we see in the shot are tense supposedly intellectual conversations where everyone says something other than what he's thinking.

Except that 'The Outfit' is no intellectual movie at all, with deep characters, moral dramas and moral choices. It is quite an ordinary Mafia story with a lot of unexpected plot twists. And the creators of 'The Outfit' keep the audience's attention not at all because of deep meanings, but because of the attraction of masks being taken off one after another...

'The Outfit' is the directorial debut of Graham Moore, who has already won an Oscar in 2014 for Best Adapted Screenplay for 'The Imitation Game. He co-wrote the script for 'The Outfit' with actor Jonathan McClain ('Mad Men'). These two did an admirable job of cramming as many templates from numerous mob movie stories into their high-profile debut. There is as much originality in the film as there is in the poster for the film, which is almost a one hundred percent copy of Saul Bass' legendary posters.

Although it would be completely unfair not to note the film's excellent direction and the excellent work of the cast - Mark Rylance, Zoe Deutch, Dil Aubrayen and Johnny Flynn.

If you love detective entertainment stories and you enjoyed 2019's 'Get the Knives Out', you'll probably enjoy watching 'The Outfit'. A film that would have turned out much better if it hadn't so assiduously tried to cast a veil of intellectuality and depth over itself, and instead added a few drops of much more appropriate humor to its entertaining content.
