A film that redefines anti-war cinema: Cimino masterfully contrasts the coziness of the steel town routine - weddings, hunts, fraternal gatherings - with the nightmare of captivity and roulette, where the stakes are lives. De Niro masterfully evolves from confident leader to fractured survivor, his gaze conveying the full spectrum of pain without further ado. Walken gives an Oscar-winning performance as the fragile Nick, trapped in the hell of gambling, leaves a scar for life; Streep in an early role is already mesmerizingly vulnerable, and the ensemble (Spatzit, Savage, Cernado) creates a sense of real community.
