Story Movie

Let's Spend the Night Together is a concert film capturing one of The Rolling Stones' most extensive tours of North America in 1981. Directed by Hal Ashby, the film offers viewers the “feeling of being there” at a live performance: most of the scenes were shot at arenas in Tempe, Arizona, and East Rutherford, New Jersey, using dozens of cameras. The film is based on Mick Jagger's stage energy, powerful rock ‘n’ roll sound, and the band's huge hits from the first twenty years of their career.

The set list includes classic tracks such as “Under My Thumb,” “Jumpin' Jack Flash,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “You Can't Always Get What You Want,” as well as more recent songs from the album Tattoo You — “Start Me Up,” “Shattered,” “Little T&A,” “Waiting on a Friend,” and the finale “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.” The director adds a few behind-the-scenes shots, fragments of preparations for the performance, and archival material, but the main focus remains on the show itself, rather than on in-depth documentary narration.

Review 4K Movie

Let's Spend the Night Together is not a “deep” documentary, but an honest Rolling Stones concert, and that's how it should be perceived. The film perfectly shows how the band performed in arenas in the early 1980s, with a huge show, backup dancers, bright stage design, and maximum focus on hits.

Mick Jagger completely dominates the screen: his charisma, choreography, and interaction with the audience are the main attraction around which everything revolves. The vocals and playing of the other members seem a little “tired” at times, as many of the songs had been played hundreds of times by then, but for fans, it's still powerful and emotional material.

The strengths are the live sound, energetic versions of hits, and the opportunity to hear some rare tour material, as well as the moment when Jagger comes down into the audience with a microphone and effectively turns the stage into one huge show for the audience. Cons: sometimes unsuccessful “symbolic” inserts and the feeling that some songs are sped up to fit everything into the film format.

Overall, for a wide audience, this may be “just another concert,” but for fans of The Rolling Stones, Let's Spend the Night Together is a valuable souvenir of the stadium tour era and a great excuse to turn up the volume and feel like you're right there in the arena.
