In London in 1888, Dr. Ekman (Claus Kinski) is a respected surgeon hiding a dark secret: he is Jack the Ripper, taking revenge on prostitutes for the trauma of his childhood and his prostitute mother. The police are unsuccessfully investigating a series of brutal murders, while the maniac continues his hunt.

Jack the Ripper is a classic exploitation film by Jesús Franco, in which Klaus Kinski, playing a psychopath, carries the entire movie: his crazed gaze and fury make the murders truly terrifying, while the graphic gore (dismemberment, knives in the guts) and eroticism are shocking even by 1970s standards. The atmosphere of foggy London with horse-drawn carriages and brothels sets the mood, but Franco, as always, gets lost in chaotic editing, nonsensical psychedelic elements, and two-dimensional characters.

For fans of Kinski and Franco exploitation, this is a cult-status gem, especially in the new 4K release, which reveals the details of the violence and shadows. But if you’re expecting a coherent thriller à la *From Hell* you’ll be disappointed: this is a cheap, delusional, but honest grindhouse horror. 6/10 Kinski does his thing.
