Story Movie

In a bleak future ravaged by an organ failure epidemic, the megacorporation GeneCo sells transplants on credit and sends ruthless Confiscators armed with scalpels after debtors. A wild gothic rock opera from the director of Saw II–IV, starring Anthony Head, Sarah Brightman, and Paris Hilton, with not a single conventional line of dialogue—just heavy guitar riffs, operatic vocals, and dark humor. In 4K Ultra HD, this bloody cyberpunk grotesque takes on incredible clarity and depth in every neon-lit frame.

Review 4K Movie

A contender for cult status with a dash of Blade Runner and a bloody flourish of Saw
Darren Lynn Bousman has nerves of steel and utterly unbridled courage. That’s the first thing that comes to mind when watching his twisted, eclectic musical *Ripo! Genetic Opera.” The man who gave the world *Saw II, III, and IV* is the last person you’d expect to deliver a full-fledged rock opera. And when you see such polar opposites as the queen of opera pop, Sarah Brightman, and socialite Paris Hilton in the credits, the “expected failure” meter starts to go off the charts. But the craziest thing here is that disaster doesn’t strike—this wild cocktail actually works.
The story unfolds in a bleak future where humanity is dying out from an epidemic of organ failure. The unscrupulous corporation GeneCo eagerly sells new body parts on credit to desperate people. But woe to those who miss a payment: Nathan Wallace (Anthony Stewart Head, best known for his role as Giles in Buffy) comes for their souls—a full-time Confiscator who, scalpel in hand and without anesthesia, literally extracts the company’s property from the living flesh of the debtors.
In the new 4K remaster, the film’s aggressive and deliberately theatrical visual style comes into its own. Bowsman flouts the conventions of classic film storytelling: animated comic-book interludes, rich color filters, and grotesque sets now look particularly vivid and high-contrast, without losing any detail in the deep Gothic shadows. But the biggest surprise is the music. Almost all the songs sound surprisingly cool, including those performed by Hilton herself, who fits perfectly into the role of the self-obsessed daughter of a corporate executive (Paul Sorvino), obsessed with having her face surgically altered. And although on paper Brightman was listed as the main vocal draw, Anthony Head steals the show here. In a film that contains no conventional spoken dialogue at all, he not only delivers a masterful dramatic performance but also masterfully shifts his vocals—from the soft, restrained tone of a caring father to a raw, growling rock voice when he dons the executioner’s mask.
Of course, there were some rough edges. Horror star Bill Moseley (“The Exorcism of Emily Rose”), playing the psychopathic son of GeneCo CEO Luigi Largo, commands wild charisma, but his vocal abilities can only be described as “modest”—and that’s being very polite. However, given the project’s sky-high ambition, Boseman simply couldn’t have cooked up this crazy scramble without breaking a couple of eggs.
Back in the day, Lionsgate’s marketers tried their hardest to sell *Rip!* right from the start as a new classic in the vein of The Rocky Horror Picture Show or *Ghost in Paradise*. In 2008, such manufactured hype seemed like overkill—cult status can’t be decreed by a studio; it’s forged over years of fan devotion at midnight screenings. And here’s the irony: time has shown that all the right ingredients really did come together. “Rip!” weathered the critics’ skepticism, gained an army of costumed fans, and proved in 4K that Bosman’s crazy gamble paid off in full.
