Review 4K Movie

This is Part One of a Two Part De Gaulle Biopic, and launches straight into WW2, no mucking around with childhood exposition here. It's hard to gauge how much French history is known by non-French, but De Gaulle's intrigues in Chad and Senegal will surely be new to most. His relationship with Churchill takes centre stage, and Winston clearly recognises a kindred stubborn die-hard when he sees one. Both actors physically capture their characters perfectly and their conversations crackle with intensity. Stirring action sequences such as Bir Hakeim also provide a welcome break to the political machinations.

Some may say the film doesn't probe enough at the behind the scenes General, but this is broad brush history, designed to bring the Great Man of history theory to cinematic reality. Given how far down France had fallen in 1940, Tilting Iron succeeds at doing exactly that.
