it's a very beautiful movie. It's a VERY beautiful movie. Harsh, but beautiful.

It is the answer to the question - 'Are sacrifices in vain?'- 'A sacrifice is never in vain'

Even if these sacrifices are dozens of lives.

A very Asian and very European movie at the same time.

Christian morality multiplied by self-sacrifice and the Confucian concept of the path.

The story of the Korean resistance is like a biblical parable of sacrifice, redemption, new sacrifices, betrayal and the ascent to Calvary.

Absolutely unambiguous references to the Gospel make up almost the entire movie and its content answers the biblical questions - what is justice? What is mercy? What is betrayal?

Who is the movie about?

The director, screenwriter and actors elevate the story of the Korean national hero Ahn Jung-eun to the level of an epic. The movie is kind of historical and a reconstruction of historical events, but the prism through which the story is told deprives the story of all the details that enliven the narrative, those details that give the characters a vivid personality. We are not immersed in the era, the details, or the context of the events. We don't know the backstory, we don't know these people, we're not privy to how and what happens to them. We are thrown into an ice hole without explanation or preamble.

There is nothing that isn't essential. The interiors are empty and dark, the characters are dressed in suits of the same color, their faces are gray and haggard. How and what do they live on? Where are the troops, if there are generals?

Minimal introductions. BUT very quickly the viewer realizes that they are martyrs, monks of the struggle for independence. These people don't eat, they don't drink, they have families, (they seem to, but it's all behind the scenes and so far away that it's not, we only get a glimpse of it). We don't know the characters' personal stories, who they are, we only know their goal.

And they persevere towards that goal, even if specifically for each of them that goal is death.

How was it filmed?

Such movies were made about 1917, about revolutionaries, the underground and complete self-denial for the GREAT PURPOSE in the Soviet Union.

Also, a couple of scenes seem to be borrowed from Dostoevsky's novels. The Last Supper, at which they swear allegiance to the motherland and sign in blood.

A trek across the cold endless desert with snow-covered dunes to wild bandits for dynamite - visually a Western.

The battle in the snows - steaming with blood - is from the same place.

Cold Vladivostok - very similar to Dostoevsky's St. Petersburg.

And it all comes together to form a remarkably harmonious picture. Aesthetically flawless.

About the actors.

The acting is top notch. Everyone is beautiful. Hyun Bin once again shows that he is an actor with the capital letter. This role was not unexpected, he has always built his career on the principle - every next role is different. But Lee Donuk shows that he can do it and this is his best work to date. But everyone there is beautiful.

Summary.

'Harbin' is a serious, deep and quite complex movie on a historical theme, shot like a biblical parable about self-sacrifice, but it's also a story about espionage, betrayal, revenge and love of country. In one bottle according to the recipe ‘Mix but do not shake’.
