Story Movie

The artificial intelligence Entity is preparing to destroy humanity, gradually seizing control of the nuclear arsenals of the world's powers. Ethan Hunt and his team have only 72 hours to find the Entity source code device on the sunken Russian submarine Sevastopol and prevent a global catastrophe.

Review 4K Movie

The film is much worse than the previous one, but thanks to spectacular cinematography and several charismatic actors, it can be watched with some interest until the end, despite its length, but there is little good to say about it.

The script is poorly constructed and ill-conceived, with every plot twist and every detail causing you to cringe and wonder (are the world's nuclear arsenals connected to the internet and can they simply be hacked one by one? Where did the countdown clock with the exact time left for humanity come from? Didn't Luther have a copy of the “poison pill”? And so on and so forth). The technical side of what is happening is explained superficially. The plot is weak, partly because there is no MacGuffin, which in the previous film was excellently served by the two halves of the key. Due to the poorly constructed plot, the characters constantly have to deliver explanatory tirades addressed to us, the audience — an example of poor screenwriting. For the same reason, we have an ugly excess of flashbacks from previous episodes, especially in the first half of the film. The dialogues are poor, with only one good line in the entire film (“What is your name? — Koltsov. — And your first name? — Captain”). Many scenes are ruined by clichéd melodrama.

The whole action is a bit theatrical, lacking background: we don't see the world engulfed in chaos, it's all just hearsay.

The motives and personalities of the characters, even the main villain Gabriel, are not well developed; the successful images created by good actors (Ethan, Benji, Grace, Briggs, Gabriel) seem to hang in a vacuum—they have nothing to rely on in the script, while others (Dega) are on screen for no apparent reason.

Ethan Hunt turns out to be the center of the universe, the reason why the whole mess started, without whom no one dares to do anything—a traditional sign of the degeneration of a series (Sherlock, for example, ended in the same fiasco, where in the final episode Holmes, instead of investigating, plunges headlong into the events himself).

Among the few things that can be praised are the underwater and especially aerial shots in the second half of the film and Benji's evolution from a comic to a serious character. And Tom Cruise, in his 60s, is in amazing shape.
