A fast-paced action flick with all the hallmarks of a LitRPG. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next installment shows the protagonist’s standard of living. The main highlights are the dark humor—which mostly revolves around Johnny Cage—and the most spectacular fatalities. The plot is a loose interpretation of the game’s canon, combining classic elements with new storylines introduced in the 2021 movie. The special effects seem pretty good, but the choreography of the fights themselves didn’t impress me and felt a bit clunky.

Plot. Everything centers on the events of the Tenth Tournament. Johnny Cage suddenly becomes the central figure, chosen as one of the defenders of Earthrealm in the battle against Shao Kahn, the ruler of Outworld, and his fighters. Who will we see from the Mortal Kombat universe: Cole Young, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Jax, Liu Kang, Scorpion (Hanzo Hasashi), Kitana, Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, Jade, Kuan Chi, Baraka, Sub-Zero (Nub Saibot), Kung Lao. Some of the characters are definitely bad, and some are definitely good. But there were also those who, for one reason or another, switched sides.

The films in the new trilogy (2021 and 2026) create their own universe, which is why they deviate significantly from the canon of the original video games. I don’t really care about that canon. The main thing is that the fights are more intense and the special effects are cooler. This little movie didn’t impress me much. But it’s totally fine for a one-time watch if you’re into this whole superhero-esque theme with an old-school arcade aesthetic. Johnny Cage was played by Karl Urban, the same guy who played Billy Butcher in *The Boys*.
