“In the Grey” is a new, fast-paced action film from Guy Ritchie, starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González. It’s the story of a very tough girl who rallies a group of very tough guys to extract a huge amount of money from a very tough gangster. That’s pretty much what the maestro of crime films shows us over the course of its 98-minute runtime. During that time, we get to once again enjoy Ritchie’s signature dynamic editing, the elegantly buffed-up main characters, and five jokes in the script (a subjective count). On the one hand, that’s not a whole lot of humor for an action movie, but considering that the screen is mostly filled with shootouts, stares-downs, chases, and escapes, it’s not so bad after all.

Cavill and Gyllenhaal got so into their roles as “tough guys” that they forgot to show any emotions at all—though I admit that guys like that probably aren’t supposed to have any emotions anyway. I say this hesitantly, since I’ve never had the chance to be considered “tough” myself. What the film certainly doesn’t lack is drive, style, and an adrenaline-fueled, masculine spectacle. You won’t get bored, nor will you have to think too hard. In that sense, watching the movie is like watching a soccer match between Brazil and Honduras—the outcome is predictable, but it’s fun to watch the skilled players deftly make fools of the overconfident ones. Personally, I enjoyed every on-screen appearance by Christopher Hivju the most; he pulled such funny faces that, until halfway through the film, I was convinced that Yevgeny Chebotkov had begun his career in Western cinema.

To sum up, I can recommend this film to fans of Guy Ritchie, skillfully shot action movies, and those who can’t get enough of Eiza González in "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Affairs"—a film starring Henry Cavill, directed by Guy Ritchie, and featuring a plot that’s pretty much the same.
