Four turtles and a rat in the sewers of New York City got into radiation waste, mutated and turned into human-sized intelligent turtles, and the rat, who used to live with a Japanese ninja-tsu master, taught them martial arts. Have you ever wondered what makes the Ninja Turtles such interesting characters? I would venture to suggest that it is their originality. Reptiles are good fighters, but strong fists are worthless without a cold, calculating mind. For this reason, the ideal film adaptation of the comics about two-legged green mutants cannot be just a high-quality action movie or an interesting thriller—it must also have unexpected plot twists and some dramatic elements... Well, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, directed by Steve Barron, is exactly that kind of film. Almost perfect.

New Line sacrifices everything to the sake of dynamics: mysticism, the famous unhurried pace of comic book adaptations of the 80s, and even part of the plot. But believe me, it was worth it. Because there is still no other comic book adaptation with SUCH direction and such tension (The Dark Knight, with its gothic style, didn't even come close). Dozens of scenes are burned into your retina during the 93 minutes of screen time: Raf and Casey Jones' battle in the central city park, the Turtles' telepathic connection with Sensei Splinter, Casey and Tatsuo's duel, the final battle with Shredder on the roof of a building, which is spectacular even today, and finally, death in a garbage truck!

Once you get into the rhythm, it's impossible to tear yourself away. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a unique pleasure that can't really be compared to anything else. New Line chose the right approach: they didn't force the plot to fit a ready-made concept, but instead adapted the film's conditions to the events. Thanks to this simple formula, there is never a dull moment while watching. But what is more important is that by focusing on the characters and their relationships, Steve Barron managed to make every viewer feel like a Ninja Turtle. After watching the film, you will understand what it means to be a master of martial arts, love pizza, and stand up for your friends. It doesn't matter if you like the Turtles or comics in general, everyone should see this film.
