Krypto the Dog is Superman’s best friend, possessing the same otherworldly abilities as his master. Together, they bravely fight crime in Metropolis. But when Superman and the other members of the Justice League are kidnapped by unknown villains, Krypto must train a new team of helpers: a motley crew of animals from the shelter who have unexpectedly gained superpowers. Will the furry League of Superpets be able to save Superman—and the whole world along with him?

Little Kal-El was sent to Earth in search of a better life when Krypton went up in smoke. By a strange twist of fate, he was joined by Krypto—his best alien dog, who possessed the same powers as his master.

Present day. Krypto has become a loyal friend and ally in the fight against evil. When Lex Luthor tries to seize the Kryptonian meteorite that grants power, he doesn’t know that his past experiments taught Lulu—a guinea pig—how to properly seize power. Now her revenge will be sweeter, and her love for Luthor stronger. And Krypto, having lost his powers, strives to restore the alliance of pets, who have now gained superpowers.

Cast: I want to mention everyone—and I mean everyone—because every actor contributed to the voice acting of the animals and heroes. Here you have Alfred Molina, Dan Fogler, and others.

First and foremost, what stands out is the naivety of the main character, Krypto—a cocky, self-absorbed narcissist who can’t make friends among the animals (he has one and only friend; why would he need any more?—he thinks to himself), who eventually realizes that the whole problem lies within himself. Or rather, in who he has become. The hero feels jealous of Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde). And it all started with a simple conversation with dogs who, just like him, lost their owners because they met their soulmates (the LGBT theme is back in full swing. Seriously, why can’t they just leave the comics alone!?). The main character is voiced by ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who plays up—albeit in a cartoon—his on-screen invincibility. Expect jokes about his sense of smell and eating ice cream (during times of stress). By the way, I noticed an important detail: when Krypto eats ice cream, a song from ‘The Lego Movie’ plays in the background. Movie: ‘Ninjago’ (because the studio has every right to do so)

Ace also has a story of his own (the inseparable on-screen duo of Kevin Hart and Dwayne), having gone through a very difficult experience with the loss of his family. And this happened when he was still a puppy. I had a German Shepherd, and as a puppy, she bit just about everything. And, you know, if I were a kid, it’s unlikely that would have made my parents give her to a shelter. I felt much more sorry for Ace, because it wasn’t his fault—he just wanted to help. The story plays on the core message the Justice League fights for: “Why do the right thing when fate treats you unfairly?” This gives rise to the dog’s obsession: to escape to a farm where he can live peacefully and do as he pleases. But he needs friends, so...

The story features PB—a pig who can’t be herself and strives to be someone else (perhaps due to her obsession with Wonder Woman). Chip the chipmunk, voiced by Diego Luna, wants to feel safe but drives himself crazy with the fantasies in his head. Then there’s Mertol (the favorite of the whole gang)—she lacked vision and, of course... cabbage. She’ll try to give Flash a run for his money.

The film also features Thomas Middleditch (Kit, the Ice Guinea Pig) and Ben Schwartz (Mark, the Fire Guinea Pig)—both of whom will become turncoats.

But the big surprise is that Keanu Reeves plays Batman (the cartoon itself is set in a multiverse, since the Dark Knight says of himself: “I’m helped by Robin, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, and… Morgan Freeman playing the guy who helps me”). It’s good that Will Arnett isn’t voicing him this time. Another highlight is Jemaine Clement (Vladislav the Pointy from ‘Real Ghoules’) voicing Aquaman (I was afraid some Pakistani guy would be voicing him, since the look fits). The bit about him loving fish food is just hilarious.

I liked the villain played by Kate McKinnon the most. Her Lulu is just as crazy as Lex Luthor. She has no idea that Lex has been secretly using her and doesn’t really need her. But she’s in love with him. That’s why she’s hatching such a grand plan that she’ll be able to bring the Super Team to its knees!

Everything else: The film by Jared Stern and Sam Levine, based on a screenplay by John Whittington, is filled with humor, high-speed chases, and cute kittens that turn out not to be cute at all (though they’re more often chosen at pet stores). The creators have some experience in the world of superhero animation (The Lego Movie: Batman). There are a few moments where you can laugh heartily. Especially the mention of Batman’s trauma or the toy that Krypto won’t let go of.

Impressions: I’m glad that Sam Levine (creator of ‘Brother Bear’) directed the film, but there are flaws that are easy to spot. For example, why aren’t the stories of the animals from the shelter (except for Ace) revealed, and how did they end up there? On the other hand, the ending is, as always, saccharine (I’d say “rainbow-colored,” like one of the hamsters’ abilities). All the animals find their owners.
