As soon as the studio bosses from Walt Disney took up the film remakes of the original and iconic cartoon films of the studio over the years, the world stood still. The 1994 “The Lion King 4K” not only occupies a special place in the history of the studio, but also has a special emotional effect for several generations. The cartoon became a kind of Walt Disney calling card, and the game remake of The The Lion King 2160p was just a matter of time. All this gamble did not bode well, because despite the already quite extensive number of remakes, the studio still failed to release at least one worthy successor to the original on the movie screens.

For the “The Lion King 4K” was perhaps the lover of the old Disney worst of all. This cartoon is too important for several generations at once. And here it’s worth making an astonished face, because there never has been such a thing, and here again: “The Lion King UHD” of 2019, directed by the skilled John Favreau, is a soulless technical demo. The film should be perceived as a pure experiment and, in part, the picture is a new word in the development of computer graphics. It is very difficult to describe what the picture looks like, photorealism is a terribly beautiful and fragile toy in the hands of ambitious authors. Surprisingly, the shooting of the tape took place in virtual reality, which actually suggests that the “The Lion King Ultra HD” is one big expensive and high-quality special effect.

The picture is incredibly detailed, vibrant and very beautiful. The first ten minutes of the film drive the viewer, who lost his own jaw somewhere among the seats of the cinema, into shock. Nature, the physics of water, wool, microparticles, weather conditions, dust, sand, the weight of computer models of animals and so on are hitherto unattainable levels. Photorealism in cinema is not a novelty, but the “The Lion King 4K” definitely raises it to a whole new level. And if the studio shot frame by frame only the opening scene of the original “The Lion King 4K”, then there would be no remake of the price. Unfortunately, the film lasts almost two hours, almost half an hour longer than the original, for which the eyes very quickly get used to all the beauty demonstrated by the tape.

The picture very quickly ceases to amaze, the WOW effect disappears very quickly. This is due not only to the fact that the eyes quickly adapt to the picture, but also to the fact that the remake has huge problems with locations. In pursuit of realism, the authors had to completely abandon many aspects of cinema language. Many scenes that work flawlessly in the original do not work at all in the remake. All scenes are similar to each other, the differences between them are minimal. They do not particularly differ visually, by color palette or by level of emotions, since the real savannah does not look like in the 1994 cartoon. And about its inhabitants and talk will be superfluous. The entire menagerie presented in the picture, smoothly moving from the original, again, with external changes - they are realistic. Because of this, it often becomes difficult to make out which particular character flaunts on the screen at some point.

So, for example, having external differences in the original, hyenas and lions had certain features in the structure of the body and facial features, conditionally painted in one way or another solely for the sake of emphasizing the characters. In the remake, these differences are so minimal that the very hyenas for whom they changed their names for some reason differ by the audience only by their voices, which, by the way, is not an easy task. All this raises a lot of questions regarding whether the “Lion King” has at least a gram of artistic value. Photorealism stops working exactly at the moment when the characters begin to open their mouths and say something. All the magic and illusion of a certain excursion around the animal kingdom evaporates, and in their place flat, sluggishly spoken dialogues stand up, faintly resembling what was in the original.

Moreover, a very important minus: computer animations give themselves away. This is not the fault of specialists in visual effects, on the contrary, they coped with their task by 110%. The falseness of the movements simulated on a computer is striking because human eyesight is so arranged. Throughout his life, a person has somehow been watching how other people and animals move. A person knows what kind of smoothness and how the animal moves. This is a simple human nature, which even a whole staff of highly qualified specialists cannot deceive. Therefore, the idea of ​​the “Lion King” fully drawn on the computer begins to seem even more absurd. To recreate the environment - please, the viewer will believe in it, but no fantastic detailing of animals will not be able to hide the artificiality of their movements.
