Mabel, a college student, is a nature lover and an active animal rights activist. She is doing everything in her power to save a patch of wilderness—which her grandmother loved so dearly—from an ambitious mayor who intends to complete the construction of a high-speed highway. Suddenly, the girl learns that a professor at her university has developed a technology that allows a person’s consciousness to be transferred into the robotic body of an animal. Without a moment’s hesitation, Mabel jumps into a robot beaver and heads into the forest to convince the animals to return to her favorite clearing and thwart the scheming mayor.

“Hoppers” is one of those rare occasions when Pixar decides not to squeeze tears out of us, but instead offers us a hearty laugh while also teaching us a very heartwarming lesson in empathy.

The main character, animal rights activist Mabel, plays out a fluffy version of “Avatar” before our eyes. To save her beloved forest glade from heartless bulldozers, she uploads her consciousness into a mechanical rodent and sets off as a “secret agent” into the very heart of the animal world.

A devoted Pixar viewer might be surprised at first: the level of mischief on screen sometimes goes off the charts. The animals scurry about, hatch ridiculous plots, and absurd gags fly at the speed of light. To some, this eccentric humor may seem too boisterous for the studio’s usual refined aesthetic. But it is precisely in this rhythm that the film’s main charm lies.

The director seems to invite us to set aside philosophy and dive headfirst into comedy. After all, to show the real, living, and pulsating world of the animal kingdom, one simply needs to let this chaos reign on the screen.

The cartoon gently and playfully reminds us: to truly understand another—whether it’s an animal from the neighboring forest or a person with different views—you have to literally walk in their shoes. Or, in this case, try on their webbed paws and learn to gnaw on bark with gusto.
