Young writer Roger Cobb experienced the horrors of the Vietnam War firsthand, but that was only the beginning of the trials he was destined to face: Roger’s marriage fell apart, his young son disappeared, and bloody nightmares of battle continued to haunt Cobb almost every night. To write a book about his experiences, Roger moved into a gloomy, old house that he had inherited from his aunt. The house doesn’t have the best reputation: its former owner was found hanged in her room, and ever since then, strange sounds have been heard there in the evenings...

I really enjoyed the movie. It has a nice balance of mystery and comedy. At first, “The House” seems like a tense, atmospheric ’80s horror film.

Nothing funny happens at all in the first half of the movie; on the contrary, it keeps the audience on the edge of their seats—and does so quite well. There are jump scares, tense music, and a sinister house—all excellent ingredients for a scary horror film! But by the middle of the movie, you start to realize that the director is gradually moving away from pure horror and turning it into a horror-comedy.

With this concept, Miner reminded me of another famous director, Sam Raimi, who did something similar with his "The Evil Dead". Although I’m not a fan of zombie movies, I have to say that Raimi did a good job of combining horror and comedy, which is why the film appealed to so many people.

Come to think of it, there are a huge number of similar movies about haunted houses, and there’s nothing new or unusual about them; however, I liked “The House” precisely because it’s an older film. These days, they just can’t recreate that unforgettable atmosphere that used to exist in the ’70s through the early ’90s. I really enjoyed the film’s musical score.
Just hearing the melody sends chills down your spine and creates the tense atmosphere typical of a scary horror movie.

If I’d had the chance to watch this movie way back in my childhood, I would definitely have considered it one of the scariest ghost horror movies ever. After all, the film is expertly crafted: it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time, has good special effects (considering it was made in the ’80s), and features an excellent soundtrack, which undoubtedly plays a key role in building suspense. There are also plenty of funny moments, but they’re used in moderation and fit well into the film—in other words, the director knows what he’s doing and doesn’t let the movie descend into nonsense, silliness, or trashiness. I was really amused by moments like the main character taking care of the little boy, his ridiculous excuses to the cops, waiting for the ghost while wearing a helmet and holding cameras, burying the monster right in front of the girl, and so on and so forth. By the 50-minute mark, the film can safely be classified as a comedy rather than a horror movie.

Undoubtedly a classic, interesting, and thrilling horror film with elements of comedy.
