Successful businessman Peter Lowe (Nicolas Cage) is rich but lonely. Accustomed to picking up women at bars, after yet another night with a stranger, strange things begin to happen to him. Sunlight starts to cause him pain, crosses begin to terrify him, and in his apartment, he builds a makeshift coffin (out of whatever materials he can find) and starts sleeping in it. To top it all off, he even grows fangs (plastic ones, admittedly bought at a Chinese shop). By all accounts, our hero is either turning into a vampire or simply starting to gradually lose his mind…

Films like this are commonly referred to as “one-man shows”; this movie is exactly that kind of film, where practically everything rests on Nicolas Cage’s performance—a truly stunning performance. It’s a different kind of performance than, say, Al Pacino’s in *Scarface*—where, of course, the master class was second to none—but there’s definitely something similar here as well. The stunning scenes with the secretary and her constant nagging about the contract make you want to say, “Stop harping on about that damn contract!” The conversation in the phone booth with fangs in his mouth, or the apotheosis of acting and absurdity, when Cage finds a stick and starts wandering down the street with it, talking to himself. What can I say—Nick looks simply amazing and very convincing in the role of a goofball, and through your laughter you find yourself wanting to blurt out: “What an idiot.”

So, this ambiguous black comedy—in which many will find a spark of genius, primarily in Nicolas Cage’s performance—while others will dismiss the whole thing as pure nonsense. To be honest, I don’t know myself how to feel about Robert Bierman’s creation, but one thing is undeniable: there’s something to this film beyond Cage’s performance alone.

It’s not a bad movie, but most likely not everyone will be able to appreciate it for what it is. An unusual black comedy.
