1959, Paris. Half the staff at "Cahiers du Cinéma" had already directed a film. Chabrol had managed to make two, and François Truffaut was being applauded at Cannes for his "Les Coups". And only Jean-Luc Godard, whom everyone—or at least he himself—considers a genius, had a couple of short films under his belt. Godard finally decides he’s ready and borrows a small amount of money from his friend, producer de Boregar, to make a film based on a news clipping from the crime section. The director’s friend Jean-Paul Belmondo would play a crook on the run, and rising American star Jean Seberg, who had recently moved to France, would play his unreliable girlfriend.

Year after year, cinema seems to be becoming a niche that accommodates more and more of both talented artists and talentless hack writers. Linklater, who once began his career by emulating Godard, takes us back in 2025—when it seems there is absolutely nothing left to surprise the audience—to an era when cinema was something more than just a commercial niche.

Jean-Luc Godard—a film critic for the French magazine *Cahiers du Cinéma* and one of France’s most famous and revered critics—could hardly wait to make his first film. All of his friends had long since made their first, or even second, films. And then the moment arrives when Jean-Luc, having gathered his strength and secured the support of friends and colleagues, begins shooting the film that would later become the driving force behind the French New Wave.

“Nouvelle Vague” is the quintessence of nostalgia, capable of evoking emotions in both those unfamiliar with Godard’s work and those who happened to stumble upon a screening. The film is utterly honest, beautiful, and made with boundless love. It reminds us of what cinema was like many years ago—free, vibrant, and authentic.

Watching "Breathless" back then, it was as if I were rediscovering cinema—with all its rough edges, its innovative perspective, the strange rhythm set by the abrupt editing, and the first major roles of actors who went on to become cult figures after the film’s release.

I rewatched this film right before the screening of “Nouvelle Vague,” and as a result, many scenes took on an added emotional depth. The scene with Rossellini in the office where the entire editorial staff had gathered; the chemistry between Belmondo and Seberg; the support from Truffaut, Cocteau, Rohmer, and others;
the scene in the editing room, the days of filming, and the behind-the-scenes story of relationships on set—all of this creates an amazing sense of immersion.

These two projects hold a certain value for cinema. And just as they work together, supporting one another, so too do they captivate when viewed separately. More than half a century has passed since Godard’s debut, and today it is an undisputed classic, one of the most important films in the history of cinema. Linklater’s film, of course, will not become one, but even today, regardless of everything, “Nouvelle Vague” seems destined to be the kind of film we’ll watch over and over again.

Linklater recreates the era with unprecedented precision and cinephile passion, plunging the viewer headfirst into pure art—light, ironic, and heartfelt. And upon leaving the theater, you can say with your head held high: at the very moment Puycar was dying, true cinema was being born—the kind we knew and, I hope, will continue to know.
