Story Movie

In the process of filming Fitzcarraldo, Herzog proved himself no less obsessive than his character. He and his men endured incredible hardship, faced mortal danger and were subjected to every imaginable natural and man-made inclement weather during the three years of preparation and nine months of filming.

Review 4K Movie

I would describe the genre of this film as a thriller. A thriller that takes place in Herzog's mind. A thriller that inevitably leaves this mind, overturning everyone who, unfortunately (or fortunately?), found themselves next to Herzog during the filming of what is perhaps the most incredible film in the history of cinema due to the conditions in which it was shot. A thriller that takes the form of a giant ship (far exceeding the size and dimensions of a real historical vessel), it turns into a hypertrophied fantasy in the spirit of late German Romanticism.

In one episode, Herzog gives a serious speech about the jungle, its ugliness, and the monstrous meat grinder of the struggle for survival. It feels like he stole this image from Zabolotsky's Lodeynikov, but this is precisely the case when no culture is needed and nature alone influences the way of thinking. The jungle is a topos where evolution is incomplete; a topos where the devil could not help but end up, and he is still here.

Herzog is right in every point of his reasoning, except for the main one. The devil is himself. It was his decision to go so deep into the jungle, at least 500 kilometers from the nearest center of civilization, that alarmed the entire population of a much larger area, but ultimately made the filming of ' Fitzcarraldo (as well as the filming about Fitzcarraldo) a monument to perfectionism that is incredible in our day. The film states that the Amazon jungle will disappear completely by 2010, as will the cultures of the local Indians. It is telling that the jungle still exists, and the culture of the Indians still exists in some form, but the perfectionism of filmmaking has died out like the dinosaurs. Hertzog thought he was making a film about an “impossible” space that would remain only on film, but it turned out (when we watch it in this film not then, but now) that the only truly “last of the Mohicans” is Hertzog himself. The devil and the demiurge, as if specially invented to personify the very essence of cinema, which demands sacrifices like some kind of pagan deity.
