I’m quite familiar with the band’s work, have a good grasp of their history, and understand the musical context of that era as a whole. And while the film’s opening holds out hope for an engaging and multifaceted narrative, it soon becomes strikingly stale. So bland, in fact, that songs from early concert recordings are included in their entirety, and one of them even plays twice. I’ve never seen anything like this before.

The documentary lacks a voice-over or other narrators besides the band members. The story of early Led Zeppelin isn’t as elaborate or eventful as that of Black Sabbath, for example, but this documentary makes it even more boring.

What really disappointed me was the lack of analysis of the musical influences on the band. The guys talk about what impressed and inspired them to start making music, but this has nothing to do with the material they actually wrote (except maybe Plant).

So what’s the bottom line? An outside observer is unlikely to find it interesting to sit through this “spectacle” for two hours. The average fan like me will find it interesting at first, but then disappointment will set in. As for the band’s true connoisseurs… I’m sure they’ll only watch it to then tear it apart online even more mercilessly than I have.
