Filmed long before "Faunus' Labyrinth," "The Devil's Backbone" was in the Russian box office only after its successor. There is no doubt: the attention of distributors to the earlier work of Guillermo Del Toro is dictated by the obvious success of 'Faun's Labyrinth' as well as the great interest from the public and critics to his latest work in cinema. Moreover, it is no secret the director's plan to create a trilogy, which in addition to the paintings mentioned above will include the planned release in 2009 film "3993". To which, no doubt, will attract the attention of a wide audience.

The events of "Devil's Backbone" meet us in the same Franco Spain. The protagonist here is an orphan boy given by his guardian to a remote orphanage to be raised by an elderly professor and his one-legged friend. In the middle of the orphanage yard there is an unexploded air bomb with its nose stuck in the ground. Warning.

The mystery of "Devil's Backbone" is not a maze, but a ghost, sighing, in the basement by an abandoned well. What is he looking for in this world, and by whom is he sent to the other world? For contact, the spirit takes on a real appearance in the eyes of a comic book-reading Carlos, whom the principal, fondly, calls "Carlito."

And Carlito's journey along "The Devil's Backbone" will be no less dangerous and mysterious than Ophelia's adventures in the fairy-tale looking-glass of "Faun's Labyrinth". True, this time the trials of the protagonist fall not at the behest of the mysterious Faun, but because of the usual boyish tricks of "weakness," when faced with the fear of darkness and the danger of exposure, reveals the tightly knit character and the extraordinary resilience of this boy.

The war is not near - far away, coming only by the edge of the shooting scene of the guerrillas. It is obviously only a means for Del Toro to build up the atmosphere of his film, constructing an extreme situation that, exploding, becomes a moment of truth for all the actors.

It has its own protagonist, and the naturalism of violence and pain is no less overt than in "Faun's Labyrinth." Del Toro, by tradition, brings to the altar of authenticity the naturalness and uncoveredness of facts and, if the plot requires it, will run a knife through a child's face, riddled with shards of glass children's backs, not to mention the stitching of cut flesh, shootings and scattered explosion, covered with blood, charred bodies of children.

The director dissects motives and characters, emphasizing the nuances of behavior, psychology, personal qualities, highlighting the life lines of his characters, reflecting on the violated values, while maintaining the purity of thoughts and strength of spirit of the child, overcoming the fall and decay, presented in the form of ungrateful scoundrel, cruel real world. Del Toro's ghost turns out to be friendlier and kinder than the inhabitants of "this world" who have preserved their living flesh and blood. In general, the devil is not as frightening as ... living people.
