Even in a fairy tale, there must be an explanation for the miracle. A fairy tale explanation of its own. Suppose Ivanushka became a little goat for a reason, but because he drank the wrong water. This film is a fairy tale with no explanation. A fantasy extravaganza in which there is no logic, neither real nor fairy tale.


How can one become a brilliant pianist - a composer, an improviser - without learning music? Just a child sat down at the piano and played like a mature Mozart. But even Mozart was still taught. A fairy tale? Then let's introduce a good wizard. Who will turn the furnace room into a nursery, the workers into nursemaids, and the poor foundling into a virtuoso. So why isn't there a wizard? In 'Cinderella' everything was clear: here is a pumpkin, and here is a golden carriage, here - no. Hence the annoyance.


And also: the annoying narrator. It is better to tell a tale with humor, with a good sly twist. Here the narrator is very damp with feelings: he is either shedding a tear, or, pardon me, he is seething with boiling water from the main character and his game. Don't. Let the audience marvel. Let our hearts sink and tears fall. Let our feelings arise. We don't need to stir them up. And when what happens is preceded and commented on by the narrator, there is a clear overreaction. It's like going to the movies with a goofy buddy who's already seen the movie and is sharing his impressions along the way. Or like cheap humor shows, where with every dumb joke behind the scenes you hear explosions of collective laughter.


What remains? Professional camera work. Nice music. Weird Tim Roth in a strange role - it's impossible to pull it off, though the actor is talented. There is such a basis, such a script that almost from the very beginning you have to say: I don't believe it!
