This movie touches upon one of the most important problems of intimacy: such things as being yourself and being together with someone are not always compatible. People in a couple even subconsciously adjust to each other, change themselves and their habits. And that's the progress Katie and Huble have made. They've learned to deal with each other's flaws through humor, ignoring each other, or sex.

But as painful as it is to realize, their love proved unable to overcome their dissimilarities in ideology, character, and even appearance. Hable did rewrite his book, tweaking the script to fit Cathy's hated Hollywood standards, Cathy did get involved in the political struggle and overreached as well. This was the final point in their relationship. After waiting for the birth of their child, they broke up.

However, this does not mean that even after years they became less in love with each other. It's all about the fact that being together they were constantly pushing each other, not allowing themselves what they wanted so much. It cost them a lot of effort to constantly hide their true selves - the successful handsome man and the fierce oppositionist. They hid them deep within themselves, but in the end, their true selves came out.

Relying on the director's view, it turns out that people part not because of life circumstances, not because of fading feelings, but for the right to be themselves.Sydney Pollack managed to clearly and vividly convey to the viewer his thought. Thus, psychologism is the most important aspect of this movie.

And Pollack turned out to be a master at it. There is not a single meaningless dialog and superfluous scene in the movie. Every altercation between the main characters reveals their relationship, shows why and because of what such a relationship has developed between Katie and Hubble.

'I don't think we're going to make it,' premonitions Hubble, who doesn't know how to lose. Therefore, anticipating losing in advance, backs down.

Katie, on the other hand, insists that they must at least try. 'We can win,' Katie, who never gives up, replies to him.

It's hard to say they've lost. After all, despite their breakup, Katie and Hubble will forever have memories of what they were like together.
