These two films by François Truffaut are not exactly a dilemma, as the characters are radically different, but the subject matter is very similar. 'Jules and Jim' is the director's third feature film, while the 11th film 'Two English Girls' serves as a continuation of his exploration in a 180-degree reversal.

These are stories of free love, where the development of the plot resembles the line of a heart rhythm - rises and falls of feeling, many sharp angles, jumps, drops and then only one stationary line. In the first movie the characters are two male friends and a woman, in the second two sisters and a young man.

The idea of hippie freelove does not appear immediately, in the second film after the first relationship fails, as an opportunity to escape failure and misery, the hero adopts the idea and spreads it. In 'Jules and Jim' a woman goes against the traditional understanding of relationships, which is due to her character, careless, windy, frivolous, under her charms, the friends are forced to accept this development, and although Jim tries to break free and escape to his mistress, he still comes back. Jules, on the other hand, simply loses all free will and choice.

These relationships that should have been free are like a spider web, everyone is entangled and everyone is tied to each other with no way to get free, the love affair has a strong influence on the rest. The first movie shows the interconnectedness of love and friendship, Jim and Jules' feelings for the same woman did not break them up, and in the finale Jules returns the thought to a failed friendship due to tragedy. In the second it is love and family, and the situation turns out to be almost completely identical. Love in these films is both a creative force and a destructive one, leading to ruin and loneliness.

In the picture 'Jules and Jim' there is a focus on psychological aspects, it is devoted to the disclosure of the theme of relationships, in the second border is wider, although the same issues and problems are in the center of attention, but more touched on the theme of family, traditions, as well as culture, religion, art. The director shows the situation from different angles and plans, there are many points of view. But both movies are closely connected in a single presence of repeated situations, phrases, for example with letters, the heroes of both movies write sometimes the same lines, in the whole a large number of parallels.

But returning to the theme after 19 years, rethinking the situation in a new way, the outcome remains the same. The 'atomization' of feelings turns out to be senseless and tragic, and the verdict is loneliness.
