Jean, a socialite, returned to Paris after a three-year stay abroad and went to a fashionable party "from ship to ball", and met his old acquaintance Claire. However, the woman was not alone, but accompanied by a young and attractive blonde Anna. Going to a restaurant after a boring party, Claire informed Jean that Anna was her property.... A week later Jean and Claire met again and went for a walk to the Paris Botanical Gardens, where Anna was forced first to steal a flower and then to urinate in front of Jean. From that moment on, the young man slowly began to be drawn into the strange relationship between the two women, and soon Claire handed her slave girl into complete submission to Jean, who did not resist, but gladly joined in the public humiliation and beating of Anne. However, such a strange love triangle could not exist forever, and one day the relationship of its participants to each other dramatically changed....

During the boom of adult films, in the late sixties and early seventies, many arthouse filmmakers tried to communicate their revolutionary ideas through the prism of exploitation pictures exploring human sexuality. In old Europe, directors such as Tinto Brass, Valerian Borowczyk, and Juste Jaquin made truly aesthetic, highly artistic, expensive erotic films. However, in the U.S. production of this kind of pictures was something humiliating, so the creation of such tapes were engaged in small independent companies and rare enthusiastic directors specializing in cheap B-grade films.

Here and the cult American filmmaker Radley Metzger shot his first erotic tapes on the meager funds from his own wallet. Nudity is a good commodity. The tapes more than recouped the costs. The more so that the stylish films of the director won against the background of second-rate clichéd pictures spinning in grindhouse cinemas.

Despite the abundance of obscene scenes, Metzger's films can hardly be called second-rate. His metaphorical films, with their visuals, are similar to those of serious European auteur directors such as Bertolucci or Liliana Cavani.

The Image” is one of the most significant works in Metzger's oeuvre. Based on the sadomasochistic novel of the same name 'L'Image' by Kathryn Rob-Grier, the film caused contradictory feelings among American film critics. Some of them were angry and wrote scathing reviews of the picture, calling it dirty sexploitation. Another part considered Metzger brave creator, who was not afraid to erase the line between porn and art.

In its plot and manner of narration, the picture resembles a hybrid of “The Story of O” by Juste Jaquin, “Scandal” by Salvatore Sampieri, “Last Tango in Paris” by Bernardo Bertolucci and “Embrace” by Paul Collet and Pierre Drouot. But unlike the aforementioned works, Radley Metzger's work is more provocative.

The picture is full of obscene scenes. Heroes have sex (often not simulated) half of the screen time. However, the tape does not slip into a low-brow movie for adults, thanks to inimitable direction and sense of style Metzgera.

For actors Carl Parker and Marilyn Roberts - “The Image” was the biggest success in the movie, but after a number of high-profile scandals associated with the movie, the road to Hollywood for them closed forever. Charming blonde Rebecca Brooke, who played the lead role, was a little luckier - she starred in a couple more erotic pictures of other directors, but these tapes could not be called successful.

“The Image” is worth watching, if only because such movies are no longer made. Times of porno-chic irrevocably gone. The adult film industry now has nothing to do with art. And there are no directors like Radley Metzger in the United States today.
