Chronos is a small device that Umberto Falconelli, an alchemist who escaped from Spain to Mexico, invented in 1536. A device that granted immortality. However, in 1937 the alchemist's life was cut short by a tragic accident, because Chronos promised eternal life to the one who would feed it with his own blood. The property of the mansion where the alchemist lived was sold under the hammer. And then one day the owner of an antique store, old man Jesus Gris cracked open the figure of an angel and, finding a strange box inside, activated its winding mechanism.

“Chronos” in no way falls under the definition of a simple horror movie, created to entertain the audience, ‘Chronos’ is in many ways a philosophical movie, with the characteristic handwriting of Guillermo Del Toro. The movie is based on the legend of an alchemist who realized the dream of no generation of people, who found a cure for death, allowing to push back the forced ending.

Many authors from great writers to scriptwriters b-digit movie could not avoid the theme of eternal life, Del Toro, as it turned out, one of the best movie storytellers of recent years even at the beginning of his career set this theme, a theme undeniably interesting stirring the minds of mankind since the first gone to the next world.

In the struggle with death for life, a man eventually loses always, but the taste of victory is always more pleasant and this story is no exception. For this victory people are ready to sacrifice a lot, let's take cinematography, after all we are talking about a movie, let's take the villain Darth Vader, who became a traitor and a despicable killer solely because of the fear of losing his beloved, let's remember the recent “The Fountain”, life is good, but when its end is near life is already imperceptible....

In “Chronos” a man accidentally becomes the owner of the first means of death, but, as you know, in cinematography, you can not leave the screen without competition and struggle for a miraculous invention, otherwise it will initially be uninteresting. And so Del Toro, having hung on the screen all sorts of things to distract attention and intimidate the spectacle, opens the confrontation between two not-young people, one of whom has, and the other is looking for an opportunity.

Accidentally acquired immortality, also immortality, and the acquisition of competitors - a struggle, as they say not for life, but for eternal life. And by all the laws of the movie one of the heroes should be good and the other bad, but here's how to sort out, because one is more necessary than the other, the man who had Chronos, and so was happy family, home, “what else does a man need to happily meet old age?”. And the other had everything except Chronos, to achieve by any means, while slowly dying, collecting his organs extracted due to diseases.

In their own way each of them is bad, but each of them has good motives, they are selfish, yes, but people's selfishness should always be present and it is present, making people a free personality fighting for their interests. But by what means is another question, meanness should not be rewarded....

The film reveals not, how much positive side of immortality, but, how much its negative side, the man turns into a hostage of his possibilities, and his inner world is embodied outside, having become immortal, the man is not destined to become the same, if only in the eyes of the closest surrounding, but those are considered interested parties.

Del Toro managed to make a decent film in very limited conditions, not having wide financial opportunities, he successfully covered this fact, paying more attention to close-ups than to the surroundings, and this has its own beauty, it looks really frightening at times.

The actors in the movie are interesting and even if most of them are unknown to me, it frees them from the plume of other roles and images, so it seems that they got into the image. And the only known face - Ron Perlman - looks at ease in the image of such a funny errand boy, fulfilling the will of his dying uncle solely out of selfish motives, hoping to get the inheritance. His character here is not serious, but the most disgusting, the actor managed to make him so, the actor well done. But the director in this movie is definitely in the foreground!
