It is a tragic love story between a young saleswoman in the umbrella store Genevieve and Guy, who works at a car service station...Genevieve's mother is against their love, but their feelings are stronger... They spend time together after work, walk the streets of Cherbourg, promising each other to keep feelings for life and never forget about their love....

But a summons to the army comes for Guy. He is forced to leave. Genevieve promises to wait for him and looks long after the departing train on the platform, which takes her Guy into the unknown....

Meanwhile, things are getting worse for Genevieve's family...Her mother, who owns the umbrella store where Genevieve herself works, is ruined, and she and her daughter find themselves in debt. What can save them? Only a lucky break! And the chance comes: a rich man in love with Genevieve has Roland offers her his hand and heart, even though she is pregnant by her lover...Meanwhile Guy writes less and less often...Sometimes there are no letters for weeks...Genevieve is tormented by the unknown, she is tormented by doubts, whether Guy really still loves her and remembers her...Maybe he has forgotten her and is looking for love with other women...?

One of the most beautiful and saddest musicals ever. The very young Catherine is wonderful in the role of Genevieve. Michel Legrand's amazing music throughout the movie makes it even more tragic.

The climax of the movie is when the characters meet six years after that farewell at the train station. He already has a family with Madeleine and a son. She has a daughter, too. By him. Two minutes alone, a few quick glances...They try to deceive themselves and each other, they have long ago another life, but they still love...This love, doomed, long forgotten shines in their tired eyes... Just two minutes together....

Many years ago at the premiere of “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” the audience cried, sympathizing with the story of unhappy love... And those who have just discovered this film can not help but feel its sincerity....
