Story Movie

The catastrophe that took place in the capital of Ukraine has left Jay, a former soldier in the British Army, with severe scars on his body and soul. Cruelty and ruthlessness are new, unexpected for all those who knew Jay before, qualities of his personality. An exemplary family man and loving father becomes an assassin and together with his new partner Gall goes on his first assignment. Gradually, the fear and paranoia that has enveloped his mind plunges him into the depths of darkness.

Review 4K Movie

The main character, Jay, is a former soldier. He served in various hot spots around the world, and his last operation in Kiev ended tragically for him under mysterious circumstances. The events that took place in Kiev are presented very sparingly, and based on the available information, innocent people suffered because of Jay. A year after Kiev, Jay, unemployed, overweight, unable to find his place in peacetime and provide for his family, receives an offer to kill three people: a priest, a librarian, and a member of the British Parliament. Together with his colleague and best friend Gal, they agree to take the job.

The strangeness begins immediately after meeting the client, who is accustomed to signing contracts with blood: each victim is not particularly surprised at the sight of the killers and expresses sincere gratitude to the main character before dying.

Through key scenes, Ben Wheatley shows that all contracts are nothing more than a carefully planned operation by a mysterious pagan cult to prepare Jay for initiation. The cult leads Jay from victim to victim, awakening fierce hatred for one of them, forcing Jay, due to his mental instability, to stray from the course and, in the name of justice, kill people who are not on the list, and ultimately pushes him into the abyss of madness, thereby completing his initiation into becoming The Chosen One.

To fully understand Kill List, I had to watch the film twice and write down all the scenes that were important for understanding the plot on a separate sheet of paper. Foreign resources explaining the meaning of the film and the ending also helped. I have never been so fascinated by unraveling a film puzzle as I was with Kill List. And I was impressed with the results. Once I had a complete picture of what happened in the film, I saw how everything in Kill List was in its place. Ben Wheatley's responsible approach to writing the script and attention to detail (down to the hero cutting himself while shaving) deserves respect.

However, it is difficult for me to list this as one of the film's strengths, because I see no objective reason to complicate the plot so much and to hide information that is important for understanding the plot so carefully from the viewer. But this drawback is offset by the fact that there are no unnecessary details in the film, so Kill List can be viewed as a mosaic that can be put together with enough patience.

But what should motivate you to put this puzzle together? The excellent presentation of the plot and the superb direction, which, together with the soundtrack and cinematography, create a sense of anxiety and discomfort. But there are a number of problems with this. The fact is that the remaining half hour of action with the cultists contrasts poorly with the rest of the film, which worked perfectly to create a terrifying atmosphere of mystery and uncertainty.
There are also questions about the plot. Yes, the script is excellent: the characters, the dialogue, the logic of what is happening - everything is very good here, but there are a couple of questionable moments. If the whole story with the murder of three people was one big ritual, then why didn't the third murder take place? It seems to me that this could have been played out differently, and the film would have benefited from it and not frustrated the viewer who was expecting the politician to be killed. Another complaint is about the very essence of the cult. It is presented in the film as a kind of abstraction, a collective image of a cult from any Noam film about pagans. Unfortunately, we are given no information about their mythology.

Ben Wheatley, who started out with videos on YouTube, has made one of the best debuts in the horror genre. Bordering on art house, but not quite fitting into it, Kill List is a rather complex, puzzle-like story that at first seems like an everyday drama, then abruptly turns into a bloody thriller with elements of mysticism, and then veers completely toward violent trash with naked cultists.
