To be honest, I thought Oliver Stone had really gone downhill after the 90s. But this film was a pleasant surprise, reminding me of the days of Natural Born Killers.

It's all shot in a stylish, youthful way. It's as if it wasn't made by Oliver Stone, but by some former music video director. The action takes place in the sun-drenched landscapes of California and Mexico, where a harsh crime drama unfolds about the confrontation between two friends who grow and sell weed and a Mexican drug cartel. Ben and Chon live with a Swedish family with a girl named O, short for Ophelia. The cartel kidnaps her to ensure the friends' loyalty.
The trio of main characters, played by young Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Blake Lively, are attractive and energetic. But when the old guard appears on screen in the form of Salma Hayek and, especially, Benicio Del Toro and John Travolta, their acting overshadows the new generation. Del Toro plays the cartel's henchman Lado brilliantly, and Travolta does a good job as a corrupt FBI agent.

There is rampant on-screen violence, a good plot with room for surprises, two endings (one from the book, the other added by the director), a lack of positive characters, vivid imagery, and a decent cast. The pace slows down at times, but overall, it's not bad. Oliver Stone has apparently given it his all one last time.
