Story Movie

Randle Patrick McMurphy, a pathological criminal and rebel, is transferred from a penal colony to a psychiatric clinic to determine whether or not he is mentally ill. At the clinic, he discovers that the ward is controlled by a cold-blooded, strict and routine-obsessed head nurse, Mildred Ratched. McMurphy intends to disobey the absurd, in his opinion, rules and at the same time to have fun from the heart. His rebellious nature infects the other patients, but Nurse Ratched is determined to stop it.

Review 4K Movie

Very often, the desires and actions of a sane person can be mistaken for madness. In pursuit of new life experiences, he is capable of harming not only himself but also those around him. If everyday life is starting to get boring, why not try to spice it up a bit? For Patrick McMurphy, a professional slacker with years of experience, that spice was a stay in a mental hospital at the government's expense. Communicating with mentally ill people can greatly improve one's mood and add variety to one's personal life, so by pretending to be crazy, McMurphy, albeit with difficulty, manages to get himself admitted to a psychiatric clinic as a patient.

From the very first days, Patrick's appearance radically changes the atmosphere within the hospital walls. In a relatively short period of time, he establishes contact with almost every inhabitant of the “yellow house,” whether they are patients or members of the service staff. However, there was one person who did not share McMurphy's behavior—a nurse named Miss Ratched. Soon, a real war begins between them, with the stakes being quite high—the fate of every patient in the ward.

This film should be viewed with great caution, as the main storyline is quite subtle. The narrative about the harsh everyday life of mentally ill people walks the line between drama and comedy. This mixture of two seemingly contradictory components is nevertheless very interesting. At first, the patients in the hospital look like big helpless children, but once Patrick McMurphy enters their lives, we see that each of them is a completely independent personality, capable of taking responsibility for their actions. They are not sick, no. They are simply terrified of the cruelty of the society in which they find themselves, which is slowly destroying them. But one man, without even realizing it, taught them to fight injustice and resist the cruelty of the outside world. True, the price he paid for this turned out to be too high...

The film touches the soul, makes you think about the role of the individual in society, and stays with you forever. It is literally imbued with the poetry of life and, at the same time, carries a certain irony that mocks and condemns human callousness and cruelty. It is already about forty years old, but it remains relevant to this day.

At the time, Milos Forman had to listen to a lot of criticism from the author of the book, Ken Kesey. The accusations mainly concerned the fact that the director had significantly reworked the novel, adapting it for the screen at his own discretion and deviating considerably from the original. Kesey even refused to watch the film when he learned that the narrative would not be told from Bromden's point of view. But did this really harm One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? I don't think so. On the contrary, it added to the intrigue, as the character of the Chief is only fully revealed at the end of the film.

The acting skills of all the cast members are mesmerizing from the very first minutes of viewing. Jack Nicholson is, as always, infinitely charismatic. Louise Fletcher simply does her job conscientiously, while the still-young Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd fully reveal their acting potential, not forgetting to charm the viewer with their incomparable performances. The film is a masterpiece. For all time!
