Julianne Moore, beautiful and tired, tries to be a mother to someone who is still a kid himself. And between them—a camera, lights, a motor, and a lack of clothing. Here, Anderson begins to talk about what will later become his eternal theme—how pain from the past glues together identity, how trauma is not an event, but a climate. In Magnolia, he will break this down into details, in The Master he will turn it into a philosophy, and here he simply quietly shows how the characters cling to each other like a lifeline. Philip Seymour Hoffman is my personal star in this domestic cosmos. His Scottie Jay is a man of the background, a man of pain. He is always there, but always ignored. He is in love, but mute. His scene with the car is the apotheosis of loneliness. When you are still alive, but no longer needed by yourself.
