Review 4K Movie

A new masterpiece from Korean master Park Chan-wook, starring the brilliant Lee Byung-hun.

Park Chan-wook is rightly considered one of the masters of Korean cinema, who has maintained his touch over the years. This is particularly noticeable against the backdrop of a noticeable decline in Korean cinema, making it all the more gratifying that these recognized masters continue to delight audiences.

Just like in *The Decision to Leave*, the film is incredibly stylish and beautifully shot and directed. Exquisite direction, superb cinematography, lavish visual design, and symbolism. Park, like no one else, knows how to blend the funny and the tragic, the beautiful and the repulsive—and all of this with incredible harmony, balance, and subtlety, as only he can. The film has a unique aura, mood, and aftertaste. The film’s pacing is excellent; it’s engaging to watch and draws you in instantly.

Lee Byung-hun, who delivers a magnificent performance in the film, is not without reason considered one of Korea’s best actors. Behind his handsome exterior, the actor can convey a full spectrum of emotions with just his eyes, and here he delivers arguably the best role of his entire career; at this point, one can safely say that this is the role of a lifetime. On screen, the actor is simultaneously funny, tragic, and at times pitiable, yet incredibly charismatic. What he delivers in front of the camera can only be described as magic—you follow every glance, every movement, every turn of his head, the way he speaks and moves. His co-stars here are also no slouches in the acting profession, and each gets their moment to shine, delivering the flair and class they’re capable of—Lee Sung-min, Cha Seung-won, Park Hee-soon—the entire ensemble is excellent, and there are no unnecessary people on screen.

It was doubly interesting to compare this adaptation of Donald Westlake’s novel with Costa-Gavras’s version, *The Knife of the Guillotine*, of which Park Chan-wook himself is a huge fan—he even dedicated the film to the director in the credits. Apart from the basic plotline and a few scenes, Park (as expected) made his own film, his own adaptation with a host of changes, additions, and variations, taking into account local flavor and philosophy, and that’s great. The ending, by the way, is also noticeably different.

All in all, what can I say—it’s another work of art, another display of style and chic, another film with thoughts and ideas, and, of course, another film not meant for the popcorn-munching crowd. A definite contender for Film of the Year. That’s what it is—true great cinema, genuine art. It’s no wonder the film was showered with awards in its home country, including acting awards. By the way, the correct translation of the title is “Simply No Choice.”
