Robert Dupy, an oil worker, lives in a small town in Texas. His partner works as a waitress at a local diner. No one knows that Robert was once a talented pianist, but he gave up on his musical career, abandoned his family, and moved to Texas. But one day, he receives a message that his father is dying.

A very complex film featuring Jack Nicholson’s incomparably brilliant performance. It’s a highly realistic portrayal of a man who wants something he can’t quite define, who’s fed up with everything, and who is desperately searching for love and understanding while consciously rejecting the only person who feels affection—or perhaps even love—for him. Maybe the man is just going through a midlife crisis, reevaluating his values, feeling alienated and useless, and so on. The film doesn’t really explain anything to us. It’s hard to call Nicholson’s character a positive one, but thanks to his magnificent performance, his image feels very familiar and, one might even say, close to home, so you genuinely sympathize with him and worry about all his failures, for which he is undoubtedly to blame. Or perhaps his family is to blame, showing no joy at his character’s return home, thereby further exacerbating the protagonist’s personal drama. So he is forced to run endlessly, searching for something, in the hope that by finally reaching who knows where and finding who knows what, he will ultimately find personal happiness, inner harmony, and so on. Or maybe he won’t? As I’ve already said, there’s no point looking for answers in this film, for there is only drama and emptiness here, a mood of loneliness and alienation that, strangely enough, is conveyed to the viewer and leaves a lasting impression on the soul.

It’s a very powerful and emotional film, from which you shouldn’t expect unexpected plot twists or a gripping storyline that will keep you glued to the screen. The film is quite boring and tedious; you might not like it right away, but it provides good food for thought. It’s a film that makes you think and empathize with the protagonist’s personal drama. I highly recommend it!
