After watching the movie, I was really impressed.

Michael Jackson is a controversial figure, so I want to say right away that this movie should be viewed as an emotional, entertaining musical biopic—perfect for watching with loved ones—and that you shouldn’t look for scandals or controversial facts about the singer in it.

This project does an excellent job of immersing the viewer in the story of the King of Pop’s rise to fame: superb acting, world-famous hits, costumes, sets, and top-notch cinematography—it’s sure to leave a lasting impression on everyone.

The main character, played by Jafar Jackson, is virtually indistinguishable from Michael in some scenes, thanks to their family resemblance and the cinematographers’ masterful work. The other actors are also well-cast, and together with the costumes and sets, they allow the viewer to feel fully immersed in the story.

There’s not much to say about the music: all of Michael Jackson’s major hits from the first half of his career, as well as lesser-known songs by The Jacksons, are featured in this film.

Despite all its merits, the film has some shortcomings that prevent it from being unequivocally called a masterpiece. The first of these is the disjointed nature of the narrative. Michael Jackson was a larger-than-life figure, and it’s impossible to tell even the story of the beginning of his creative journey without omissions, but the overly frequent jumps in time eventually make it difficult to follow his biography.

The second flaw is the simplifications in the singer’s story, made to serve the narrative’s flow. Some truly important moments in his life were sidelined to highlight the main themes—his troubled family relationships and loneliness. Of course, it’s unrealistic to fit everything into two hours, but these details, if included, would have allowed the film to portray Michael as a more multifaceted person. However, someone unfamiliar with the singer’s biography might not even notice this shortcoming.

Overall, as mentioned at the beginning, the film is a solid musical biopic, crafted in a cinematic style and not claiming to be 100% accurate. It does an excellent job of exploring themes of loneliness, misunderstanding, and pressure from loved ones.
