New York, 1945. At a jazz orchestra concert in a nightclub, Jimmy—who has just returned from the front—persistently but unsuccessfully tries to strike up a conversation with a girl named Francine. The next morning, they run into each other again in the hotel lobby, where she is looking for a friend and he is trying to get another extension on his bill. When the extension is denied, Jimmy makes a run for it, dragging Francine along with him into a taxi. During their conversation, it turns out that he’s a pretty good saxophonist. Almost against her will, she ends up attending yet another one of Jimmy’s auditions...

Martin Scorsese’s film "New York, New York" was released in 1977. It tells the story of two talented people—he is a saxophonist, she is a singer. The story begins in 1945, after the end of the war with Nazi Germany. Jimmy Doyle meets Frances Evans at a party. Under a lot of pressure, Jimmy and Frances begin a romance, which leads to joint tours and married life.

Robert De Niro plays the role of Jimmy. De Niro’s performance, of course, is beyond reproach—it’s superb. His character, Jimmy, comes across as pushy, somewhat rough around the edges, and highly ambitious. His wife, Frances (Liza Minnelli), is a very successful and talented singer with great potential. However, I don’t see much affection, tenderness, or love from Jimmy toward his wife. They have frequent arguments and are constantly having it out. Jimmy makes no secret of his jealousy of his wife’s success. Ultimately, their marriage falls apart because it’s simply impossible for two very talented people to be together.

Liza Minnelli plays the role of Frances. I’d say the film was made specifically for Liza. Liza’s performance is very convincing and heartfelt, and she has a wonderful singing voice. But while watching the film, I couldn’t help but compare Liza to her mother, Judy Garland. Unfortunately, Liza Minnelli clearly falls short of her mother in terms of looks. But her voice is superb—perhaps even stronger than Judy’s.

Martin Scorsese directed a conventional film; there’s very little of the musical genre here. The film drags on too long, with too many negative confrontations and arguments between the characters. It’s only in the film’s finale that something resembling a revue—a hallmark of a true musical—appears. A major highlight of the film is the final song, “New York, New York,” performed by Liza Minnelli (Frank Sinatra later sang this song).

In conclusion, I want to say that I’m not thrilled with the film; I expected it to be much more impressive, given that the credits feature stars like Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli. But I have to give credit to Liza’s stunning wardrobe in the film. The costume designer did a fantastic job! Scorsese is Scorsese—he’s known for films that are truly gritty, thought-provoking, and socially conscious. But this musical is worth watching, if only for the pairing of Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro.
