Selma, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia who loves musicals, works at a factory and lives with her son in a rented trailer. Selma has a serious illness that is causing her to lose her sight. Her son is also suffering from the same condition. Selma hides her illness and tries to work despite her blindness to earn the money needed for her son’s treatment.

The film starts off much more interestingly than it ends. The storytelling is exceptionally good for about the first hour of the film. We are presented with a wonderfully written and deeply moving story about the difficult life of a woman who is doing everything in her power to withstand the pressures of a hard life, to hold herself together, and to help her son. Each character’s motivations are crystal clear, logical, and realistic; it’s captivating to watch the events unfold, and you find yourself rooting for the main character as if she were a real person.

Everything falls apart after a sudden murder. Logic and credibility vanish instantly, and the well-crafted drama is replaced by a tedious and manipulative appeal to pity. Why does Selma act this way? Why does the police officer act this way? Why does the American justice system act this way? Because Lars von Trier felt like it. To make it darker and more pitiful—that’s why.

All that’s left for the viewer to do is to resign themselves to it in bewilderment and, at times, take modest pleasure in the originality and entertainment value of the musical numbers. After all, one can’t take a tragedy pulled out of thin air all that seriously.
