Alex survives; his fractures are treated, but his familiar, wayward lifestyle prevents him from learning from his mistakes. To escape his reality, he needs a new dose of his sedative “medicine.” However, drug addicts, homeless people, and others who haven’t had much luck in life are sometimes capable of feeling things very deeply, reflecting on beauty, and loving. You have to listen to Alex, under whose gaze Michelle reveals her nakedness, and believe in his naive sincerity. First impressions are often deceptive. Despite its somber premise, the film possesses a French charm, as well as a unique magic that compels you to eagerly follow the events of this slightly melancholic yet exquisitely elegant film. Most likely, what Leos Carax envisioned in his mind was not a full-fledged feature film, but rather a kind of dance between two people whose fates became entwined by chance, beginning to whirl to the rhythm of a cruel world, accompanied by the heart-wrenching melodies of a weeping violin.

It’s symbolic that the director makes the main character a fire-eater—he himself is like fire. And perhaps the flame finally melted his heart, making it flutter the moment he saw the paintings created by the half-blind Michelle. And so, beneath a dilapidated bridge, a connection begins to form between the characters. And if you think about it, why aren’t Alex and Michelle a couple? They eat together, drink together, laugh together; during this time, Alex even forgets about his addiction. The only things missing from the romantic picture created by the director are a house of their own for the characters, the heroine’s good health, and Alex’s complete recovery from drugs. Two completely different people met and grew very attached to each other—even more than just “attached”: under a divine “microscope,” one could probably see how their souls intertwine. Most likely, an angel from heaven would have witnessed the most beautiful feeling in the world, while God was busy with the fates of other wanderers on Earth’s crust. One can always attempt an ideological and structural analysis of something, but in the case of “The Lovers on the Bridge,” one wants to go with the flow set by Leos Carax, leaving nitpicking behind.

After all, the film “breathes” and reflects through its on-screen characters, allowing the viewer to fully immerse themselves in the action. Although the fates of Alex and Michelle remain unclear until the very end, the otherworldly realm they’ve created brings a smile and a sense of warmth, pushing the more oppressive circumstances into the background.

In this way, Carax makes it clear: yes, everything is horribly bad, but two people whose souls are involuntarily bound together will be able to weather all hardships. However, when analyzing all the hardships and joys that the characters played by Denis Lavant and Juliette Binoche have gone through—and may continue to go through—nothing else comes to mind except to describe the events depicted with this simple yet beautiful word. It’s unlikely that love will ever become an anachronistic theme—that would mean turning the Earth into a “hellish old woman.” So, Love is. “The Lovers on the Bridge” isn’t the pinnacle of drama and romance, but the film resonates deeply with the audience because it touches the soul. When a person says they love, they are right by definition; they are happy and don’t need to prove anything to anyone.
