It would seem to be an ordinary love story between playwright Richard and actress Elisa, whose relationship is thwarted by producer William Robinson. But there’s one catch: Elisa lives in 1912, while Richard lives in 1980. He has traveled through time using the power of his imagination, creating the atmosphere of that era around him. He was inspired to do so by his love for a portrait of Elisa that he discovered at the Grand Hotel.

This rather original idea then turns into a run-of-the-mill sentimental melodrama, with the relationship unfolding at a leisurely pace to the accompaniment of Rachmaninoff’s classical music. And although I’m not a fan of this genre, I patiently decided to wait for the ending. Considering the very beginning—when an elderly Elisa gave Richard a gold watch in 1980 and said, “Come back”—the end of the time travel, and the way it unfolded, was completely unexpected, so I was rewarded for my patience.

However, I wouldn’t dare recommend this film to a male audience due to the lack of plot momentum and the abundance of sentimentality. I’d recommend it to women—either those who are very young and still believe in “the knight in shining armor,” or those who are significantly older and have already found their happiness in real life.
