Story Movie

Ted Beaumont is a successful writer. His bestsellers bear the name George Stark, but this is not a pseudonym; it is his mysterious doppelganger, who has been haunting his real half from the dark depths of the subconscious since childhood. It is he who has been guiding Ted's hand against his will for so many years.

Wanting to get rid of the fruit of his own imagination, the writer arranges a funeral for his invisible reflection. But no one can get rid of their own shadow. It comes to life and begins to take revenge...

Review 4K Movie

Ted Beaumont, a famous writer, is forced to take a huge risk: to “bury” his pseudonym George Stark, under which he wrote popular books about a ruthless killer. However, the past cannot be easily forgotten, and his “pseudonym,” his alter ego, comes to life to regain his former glory by brutally murdering those connected to Ted. His circle of acquaintances shrinks dramatically, and the writer is forced to fight his “second self” to protect himself and his family.

What we have here is not so much another adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name as an atypical George Romero film. Seeing that name, one might involuntarily think that zombies will be present in the film in one way or another, but this is not the case. The master managed to shoot a rather gloomy, mystical film with the right atmosphere and, in fact, as close to the original source as possible.

Comparing the book and the film is necessary, but quite unnecessary. Of course, there are differences, and there are plenty of them, especially when it comes to certain moments and the portrayal of characters. This is particularly true of George Stark, who in the novel appeared to be a rather crazy, mysterious, and charismatic villain who managed to play the “ghost” — appearing and disappearing unexpectedly. Here, Romero tried to convey the image of this character, but he still lost some of his charm, and at times Stark becomes a grimacing psychopath.

The atmosphere is not disappointing. The film does not rush events and slowly but surely draws us into the right atmosphere of suspense. With each passing minute, the situation becomes more tense, which is especially evident in the behavior of the main character, who is increasingly overwhelmed by George Stark's madness and realizes that he cannot simply deal with this madman. This is especially noticeable in the final minutes, when the hero and his alter ego come face to face.

In essence, there are practically no complaints about the film. Romero tried to convey the atmosphere of the work properly, and he succeeded in doing so. The only nuance is that Stark's character is not fully developed (but this does not prevent you from watching this character). In all other respects, it is an average adaptation, no better and no worse than others. The main thing is that if you fully immerse yourself in the film, it becomes quite interesting.
