In a secluded village, several young men are murdered. It is unclear not only who the murderers are, but also the motives behind these brutal atrocities. The first to fall under suspicion are Giuseppe, the local fool, and a mysterious sorceress who is terrifying the whole neighborhood.

In the center of the narrative of this picture - mysterious murders of small children. The bloody maniac shows us that there is something wrong with his psyche. Lucio Fulci perfectly intrigues the viewer by introducing a line with a sorceress who sincerely believes that she killed the children by conducting a ritual and forcing demons into the soul of the unknown.

Is she right? And, in fact, is it real? Plus, if it is true, will the killings continue?

Lucio Fulci preferred visual effects to the triumph of intellect. In a number of cases he did not set time frames, thus actually requiring the viewer to 'put together' the rebus himself after watching the movie. This cannot but please, for in this case it is the aftertaste that decides everything.

In the second half, the picture unexpectedly turns into a slender chain of inferences and reasoning. That does not exclude some very unexpected plot moves. And the ending will be unpredictable.

I think that Fulci did not strive to create a slender and harmonious work. On the contrary, he is a supporter of script arrhythmia, hints and innuendos to be revealed at the end. The triumph of truth and logic, that is how I would characterize his author's handwriting.

By the way, Florinda Bolkan gave a very memorable performance. Impressed. And her last scene (I won't get ahead of myself and recount it) - staged simply superbly. In the very best traditions of neorealism. Bertolucci and Antonioni would be envious.
