Upon returning from space, a rocket launched by a group of scientists led by Professor Bernard Quatermass crashes in the English countryside. Of the rocket's three crew members, two disappear, while the third turns into a hideous mutant who begins to destroy people and animals, feeding their flesh further monstrous transformations of his body. Quatermass decides that there is a hostile alien life form at work here.

The legendary British film studio Hammer specialized not only in monster movies. It also gained fame for its science fiction productions. And the Quatermass trilogy is one of the best.

It seems to me that the creators of The Quatermass Xperiment assumed that viewers were already familiar with the television production by Quatermass's author, British writer Nigel Neely. Therefore, they did not bother to provide additional information about the main character. Quatermass simply appears at the right moment and immediately begins to act with determination.

His concern is this: a rocket launched by Quatermass falls from space. Two astronauts have disappeared, and the third arrives in a state of strange mutation. It soon becomes clear that an alien creature capable of destroying all life has arrived on Earth in the rocket.

Hammer emphasized the paranoia characteristic of the Cold War period. Aliens are in the city! Beautiful women scream, men are helpless, fire trucks race with sirens blaring through the provincial town frozen in terror. The familiar world is collapsing. What will happen?

The story is exciting, but unfortunately, the character of Professor Quatermass is completely underdeveloped. Hammer did a much better job with the character of Frankenstein.

It is no coincidence that many years later, the creator of The Thing, John Carpenter, working on Prince of Darkness, is credited in the credits as a screenwriter under the pseudonym Martin Quatermass.
