A group of researchers, while studying an abandoned church, finds an unusual vessel. Using X-rays, they manage to determine that the vessel is about 7 million years old and, most interestingly, it can only be opened from the inside. It contains some incomprehensible substance: liquid diamond, created by some mysterious force.

An ancient manuscript says that Satan himself or his spirit rests in this diamond. As a result of the experiments, the devilish force, freed from the vessel and scattered in space, begins to infiltrate the researchers, turning them into slaves of Satan.

The success of the film 'Omen' marked the beginning of the creation of films on a religious and mystical theme, based on ancient biblical prophecies. Many directors did not hesitate to have a chance to make money in this way, including John Carpenter, who shot the horror film 'Prince of Darkness' in 1987. The film became the second in the director's 'Trilogy of the Apocalypse'. The painting justified the costs, but it is far behind The Thing, which is the first part of this franchise.

The main idea of ​​the film is the upcoming Apocalypse, which will certainly happen if some evil entity, that is, the Devil himself, is released. The Prince of Darkness plot takes place in an ancient church located in a poor area of ​​Los Angeles. The students, led by a priest, go to the church in order to investigate an ancient vessel with strange contents inside, which, according to some estimates, is seven million years old. Soon, many members of the research team become possessed by evil.

In general, the plot is quite interesting, but its implementation is frankly weak. Throughout the whole picture, one does not feel any tension and atmosphere, which must be present in the works of this genre. The action of the film develops very slowly and tediously. The first forty minutes of the picture are devoted to silly dialogues and actions, which include sexual relations between the two main characters, which could well have been put into half of this time, then the events develop more actively, but this did not affect the overall dynamism.

The murder scenes leave much to be desired, here the viewer will not see a lot of violence and blood too. The most memorable is the death of one of the researchers by putting him on a sharp object. In the film, there are some makings of a zombie infection, since the spread of the devil's substance occurs with the help of already infected (possessed by evil) heroes.

The characters in the film are mostly gray and not noticeable, not attractive in any way. Their behavior is often inadequate in scenes where it would seem necessary to behave in a completely different way. The acting is also weak and not emotional, the characters are poorly revealed. It is worth noting the not bad musical accompaniment, it is in many ways that saves the film from a complete failure. The visual effects are quite acceptable, the scene of the transformation of one of the heroines into the personification of evil looks quite creepy, and this is also perhaps the most bloody and tense moment in the film.

The ending turned out to be somehow blurry and tortured, and to some extent also absurd. The idea with the looking glass turned out to be absolutely out of place. The opened gates of Hell would have looked much better, from which, for greater showiness and apocalypticism, terrible demons or similar creatures could appear.
