At the beginning of the 21st century, the Western genre was going through far from the best of times. Most films about cowboys and outlaws in the Wild West failed miserably at the box office, and yet studios continued to make such stories, as it was an exclusively American genre on which the Hollywood pillars had always stood. And now cult director Walter Hill didn't mind taking on the Western either and directed his new film called To Die for a Dollar.

It all starts with the fact that the influential and wealthy gentleman disappears spouse. Blamed for what happened a dark-skinned deserter who went straight to Mexico. And since the husband simply can not let this happen, he hires a famous bounty hunter Max Borlund in order to return the loss and punish the one who is behind it.

Borlund himself is willing to do such a job for a pretty penny and sets off without further ado. A soldier partner will be traveling with the hunter, who is doing a very important job. But the most dangerous thing is that after Borlund went his old foe, with whom he has a long-standing grudge. Joe Cribbens has served his time and cannot wait to come face to face with the one who once caught him and put him away.

In general, Hill's film certainly doesn't look very expensive, and yet it is shot according to all the canons of the Western and has attracted a very remarkable cast, which is definitely worth talking about in more detail.

It is interesting that the role of Borlund was taken by Christoph Waltz. He once played a bounty hunter, Dr. Schultz, in the iconic 'Django Libre'. But his Borlund is very different from the character played by Tarantino. Borlund is tougher and not as ironic as Dr. Schulz. It would be strange, though, if Waltz and Hill were so brazenly repetitive. So the role turned out to be worthy of attention at any rate.

Not far behind Waltz is Willem Dafoe, who played Cribbens in this film. For Defoe, as well as for Waltz, it is customary to play villains. Here, Defoe is also in his place and tries to play every scene he takes part in to the maximum. And he is willing to do it magnificently. But the rest of the actors clearly do not reach the level of this cool couple.

The movie has some good, but fairly predictable action and all the obligatory western trappings, including horseback chases, gunfights and the like. To be honest, I wasn't particularly surprised by anything, but the movie is pretty upbeat and it's interesting to follow the plot.

'To Die for a Dollar' won't be a big box office hit and is unlikely to remain in history, but Walter Hill still made a solid genre representative and got Christoph Waltz back in the saddle, which I personally was very pleased with.
