Story Movie

On New Year's Eve, the luxury cruise ship Poseidon is in distress in the Atlantic Ocean, capsized by a giant tidal wave. While hundreds of surviving passengers, following the captain's instructions, stay in the main dance hall and wait for help from shore, professional gambler Dylan Jones searches for his way to salvation. Accompanying Dylan against his wishes are nine-year-old Conor and his mother Maggie, Robert Ramsey trying to find his daughter named Jennifer, and her fiancé Christian. They are joined by a shy stowaway, an elderly gay man intent on suicide, and a young waiter. They all make incredible efforts to escape the sinking ship to the surface ...

Review 4K Movie

New Year is the most important holiday of the year. Everyone wants to celebrate it in a special way, so that it will be remembered. Some throw loud parties with friends, while others, like the characters in this film, go on a cruise on a luxurious liner with the impressive name “Poseidon.”

There is a disco for the younger passengers, a banquet for the older ones, poker for the more adventurous, and so on—this ship has all kinds of entertainment for all passengers. Congratulations and best wishes from the captain, a performance by singer Gloria, the countdown “10, 9, ... 3, 2, 1,” the arrival of the New Year, balloons, streamers, champagne, general merriment... And then a giant tidal wave disrupts all the fun. Those who survive will never forget this New Year's Eve.

Poseidon is almost the embodiment of my idea of the perfect disaster movie about a sinking ship. A beautiful, luxurious liner, the measured life of the passengers, their carefree attitude toward the surrounding water, their relationships with each other and their personal problems, and the unexpected sinking of the “floating palace” under the influence of the merciless elements, followed by the struggle for life, fear of death, horror, despair, and screams. All this is practically flawless in “Poseidon.”

The director effortlessly and naturally showed the lives of the passengers before the disaster, which no one foresaw and which nothing foreshadowed, their acquaintances with each other, their personal problems and experiences. After the ship capsizes unexpectedly for the passengers (there is no surprise for the audience, because they are expecting it), the expected struggle for life begins, which is to be expected in the circumstances.

What particularly pleases me is that there is no rose-tinted sentimentality in Poseidon, unlike in Titanic. Here, the characters are running around the sinking ship to escape death, not a jealous fiancé. In this film, all the attention is focused on people's behavior during the sinking of the ship and their struggle for survival. The relationships between father and daughter, mother and son during the disaster are much more appropriate than a love that spontaneously blossoms in a single day and lasts until death. There is love in Poseidon, but it is where it should be, namely in the background.

In addition to beautiful images, including the luxurious interior of the liner, beautiful scenes of the sinking, and special effects, Poseidon has the horror necessary for a film of this genre. The completely natural tears of the women and children, their screams of terror, Elena's cries of “I'm not going in there!” out of fear of enclosed spaces, which in this case was a ventilation shaft, are the main things that conveyed the horror of what was happening, apart from the streams of water and the views of the overturned Poseidon. The men, on the other hand, tried to maintain their composure as much as possible and showed considerable self-sacrifice and even heroism in doing all the hard work. It was scary for all the characters, even despite the predictability of the plot.

And once you empathize with the heroes, it is, of course, thanks to the actors' performances and the director's skillful direction. It is impossible not to single out Josh Lucas from the cast, whose character is a charismatic leader who gave hope and a chance to the others. He was the first to understand that saving those who are drowning is up to the drowning themselves; having trained himself to calculate moves in poker, he calculated every move in the rescue. Dylan is the most vivid and impressive character in the film, and in addition to his excellent acting, he is also very handsome, which makes him a pleasure to watch.

The only downside to the film is its short running time. Wolfgang Petersen tried not to drag things out, but he overdid it, resulting in a film that is too condensed, lacking in scale and scope, with not enough views of the Poseidon from the inside and scenes of it sinking.
