Although the Cold War is long over, covert mercenaries, whose skills in surveillance, espionage and force-fighting are literally legendary, remain in demand under the new world order and always find high-paying jobs. A certain mysterious client assembles a team of such "paid operatives," known as "Ronins," in Paris to steal a top-secret briefcase.

It soon becomes clear that this seemingly simple task is almost impossible: the same price is promised for the same briefcase to several other illegal groups.

To get the job done, a former CIA agent nicknamed "Sam" and his hastily assembled squad must do what they have never had to do before: trust each other...

As a person for whom the '90s were a time of rosy childhood and videotapes with terrible recording quality and legendary one-voiced translations, I watched 'Ronin' more than once, because at that time I watched every foreign film I could get, regardless of the genre. At that time compared to other action movies it seemed to me boring: they talk a lot, shoot a little, except that the driving of cars is funny, but also a little, and what it has to do with these ronins incomprehensible.

And now, almost seven years later I have reviewed this film. And I realized that, perhaps, of all the detective thrillers I know, this is one of the best. And largely for the reasons I disliked it so much when I was a kid: more psychology than action. Indeed, what makes 'Ronin' so good is that it's a no-nonsense action movie. A rarity in our time, you must agree. Here is a sensible plot, which managed to avoid most of the American-action cliches, and reliably written characters.

The detective element in this movie is also very interesting. I should say right away that fans of classical detective stories a la Agathi Christie, where every lock finds its key at the end, will not like the outcome of this intrigue at all. There are questions begging questions, and much will remain incomprehensible to us. It's frustrating, but vital.

And, of course, when talking about this movie, I can't help but mention the cast. It is here truly fantastic. First of all, we should mention the acting duo of Robert De Niro and Jean Reno. Both are actors I do not always like in my movies, and both played brilliantly here. I also liked Sean Bean, but he was frustratingly short on screen. And finally, Jonathan Pryce. Here's someone I didn't expect him to be able to play the main negative character so magnificently.

This is, indeed, a great movie. It can be advised to action fans as well as those who prefer detectives and psychological pictures, because this movie is too good to be crammed into the boundaries of a certain genre.
