In the near future, a variety of technologies are involved in every aspect of human life. But in this technological world, Gray is one of the few people who likes to work with his hands. He restores and repairs old cars. One day, while returning from a client, Gray and his wife are involved in an accident and then in the hands of a gang of thugs, which leaves the woman dead and Gray paralyzed from the neck down. The same rich client offers the unfortunate man an experimental Stem implant that can restore full mobility.

The movie industry is going through a very bad time right now. Cinemas are flooded with blockbusters whose budgets run into the millions. Unfortunately, more often than not, these huge budgets are unjustified, and the next hyped-up film turns out to be nothing.

Sometimes it's the other way around - they make films on pure enthusiasm for mere money and without any advertising, but they end up with the worthy projects which can amaze. Lee Wannell's new film, Upgrade, made for only $5 million, is one of them.

The future is wide-open. A variety of technologies are involved in every aspect of human life. Police drones, cybernetic augmentations, cars on autopilot, etc. are everywhere. Except that the protagonist is not very happy with such things. Gray earns his living by restoring and repairing old cars. One day, returning from a client, Gray and his wife are attacked by bandits. As a result, his wife is killed and the hero is confined to a wheelchair. Later, he is offered an experimental STEM implant which can fully restore mobility.

One could already think, by the way the plot begins, that you are in for an ordinary thriller, where the main character takes revenge for his girlfriend (sister, brother, dog), but you should not worry, as in fact, the film has its trump cards up its sleeve.

The first of these is STEM. Having regained the ability to move with an upgrade, the hero discovers that the implant is equipped with artificial intelligence. STEM offers to help find the killers of the protagonist's wife. From this point on, the hero (or heroes) begin their investigation. And that's one of the highlights of the film. Watching the interaction between Gray and the AI is a pleasure. For example, with the protagonist's permission, the STEM can take full control of Gray's body - this translates into quite imaginative action, when the protagonist, with honed movements, like a robot, deals with his enemies.

But it is hard to call the movie an action movie, too. Because of its modest budget, there are only a couple of action scenes. And that's not what the movie is about at all. And here we gradually pass to the second merit of the movie, the plot. Starting off rather banal, the film quickly picks up steam. The further Grey delves into his investigation, the more he becomes convinced that the case is far more complicated than it first seemed. The ending is devastating and capable of shocking the viewer in a good way.

"Upgrade" cannot be called a masterpiece, but, no doubt, it is a wonderful film that can rub the nose of many blockbusters. Cyberpunk fans are highly recommended for viewing.
