1882, a former slave arrives in Yellowstone City, hoping to find a home. Meanwhile, someone murders a local prospector who has discovered gold at the mine. The local sheriff arrests the new citizen, but his guilt is not believed by the preacher. As the crime is investigated, the town splits in two.

The local sheriff comes to this conclusion after a prospector, who recently found a lot of gold, is brutally murdered in his town. The whole point of the arrest is that there is direct evidence against the stranger, and all that is left is to bring the case to court and hang the scoundrel on the gallows. The priest and his wife oppose such a trial and are determined to find the truth among the wheat of lies and to find the true murderer. Noisy passions boil in a run-down town, where a friend can be the enemy in a matter of seconds.

Richard Gray can be commended for the fact that in his new film, he tries to cover several vital issues. All of them are related to the fate of man, his motives and actions that somehow affect the people around him. In this case, the young director is interested in the consequences of easy money, namely the passion that so easily ruins many of us - envy, guile and pride. In fact, the entire plot of this film is built entirely on what happens to society when news of ghostly and momentary enrichment arrives on its doorstep.

"Murder in Yellowstone City" vividly depicts the terrible situation within a single province. Gold acts as a kind of trigger here, and with it begins reprisals, greed, debauchery, and lies. No one trusts anyone, everyone is afraid of each other, as terrible things begin to happen under the cover of night. Richard Gray makes this factor absolute, he very skillfully and spectacularly brings the passions of the inhabitants of the quiet town to the forefront. It is quite interesting to watch, time after time coming to the conclusion that no one has ever made any profit out of stolen money.

The gold in this film shines falsely in the sun until it is soaked in blood. The director constantly talks about this here and there. Take, for example, the sheriff or preacher, skillfully played by Gabriel Byrne and Thomas Jane, both characters remember the suffering and misfortune, but with tenacity and stubbornness continue to bend the line to the very end. Blood is on everyone's hands, but the implicit meaning of "Murder in Yellowstone City" is also that violence begets only violence. Petty evil breeds more evil. Questions of justice are very tentative here, because no evidence or triviality counts when two really strong characters collide.

The psychological level of the movie is quite strong, for two hours is quite enough for the authors to thicken the colors by the finale so much that the viewer will have a hard time tearing himself away from the film. Richard Gray quite competently sets the accents, not forgetting about what he is trying to convey to his audience. Problems of presumption of innocence, meanness, betrayal, despair - all this and much more play into the director's hands. In particularly poignant moments, the viewer's nostrils are tartly tickled by the smell of burning, gunpowder and soot. This is another major perk of this western, as the genre would not be its full self without gunfire and gunfire.

"Murder in Yellowstone City" is steeped in a lack of pity for the characters, and there is, as they say, an end in store for everyone. Some of them are destined for the end, others are destined for the grave. That is what makes the film so valuable that, through the visual effects, music and nice acting, it conveys the sinister spirit and atmosphere of the Wild West. It is a cavalcade of violent deaths, revolvers, saloons, and promiscuous girls. The debauchery, the poker game, the heavy stench and a certain sense of doom are aimed at those viewers who know a lot about such pictures. What's more, the writers are able to fit a Western with a decent detective story that, though old-fashioned, still clings to the eye.

"Murder in Yellowstone City" is a solid, masculine and serious movie about people who once lived in pretty serious conditions, where there was no room for tears, where you had to catch the bird of happiness by the tail with your own hands. Richard Gray made a good movie about how wealth is sometimes so deceiving that it sometimes leads to great and irreparable consequences. It's not a Sergio Leone-level masterpiece, but it's quite a daring and competent movie that leisurely develops the story arcs of absolutely all the characters. It's questionable at times, but overall the film is a pleasant experience.

It has been a long time since we encountered a picture which could captivate a viewer for a couple of hours, even if the finale is a little blurred, but it does not detract from the fact that it shames the genre in some way. The cinematography is somewhat chamber-like, but that makes it all the more rewarding. The crew have a respect for their brainchild, and that's saying a lot. Every dollar on the screen, the guys did the best they could, giving the audience a topical and timely project about greed and darkness, which still torment human souls.
